Ganahl

.5 i-70

1" north of that

says we will have to changeover because ultimately the low will turns winds southeast as it approaches. The only thing i don't understand is why that isn't happening already further west. Unless the low is going to make a curve more northeast

Looking at the current obs and radars, you can see the push but the cold air from the west is overpowering it, at least it looks that way to me. Im guessing the frozen line sets up just south of i-70 based on what I am seeing.

Light snow and blowing snow here. Per CLE's AFD, they considered upgrading to a Blizzard Warning due to the enhanced winds coming off of an ENE/NE flow from Lake Erie but ultimately decided against it because of the possibility of a little mixed precipitation riming the snow and limiting its blowing potential.

=================================

Near term /through tonight/... no changes to the headlines. Models now in fairly close agreement with the track of the surface low. It appears that we will warm a little more overnight than earlier thought. Northwest Ohio still expected to see the most significant snowfall but have cut accums down slightly because some freezing rain or sleet could mix with the snow later tonight. Was concerned earlier about needing a Blizzard Warning as NE flow off of Lake Erie will get close to criteria. However...no longer think that is needed as any sleet or freezing rain that occurs will limit the amount of blowing and drifting. Further east...expecting sleet and freezing rain to develop after sunset. Temperatures are expected to slowly warm overnight and most locations will see about a six hour period of freezing precipitation. By 09z or so...about the southeast 2/3 of the area should be at or above freezing. Will have a mixed bag of precipitation in the new forecast with rain mention toward daybreak in the east. Lows will occur early in the evening with temperatures then warming a degree every hour or two. As far as ice amounts go...expect a swatch of a quarter to a half inch of accumulation from kfdy and kmnn up through the kmfd area to near kcle. Lesser amounts toward the Youngstown area as temperatures will warm the quickest there.

Dilly the all Snow line is just North of Findley in NW ohio if your interested. I thought I would be sleet by now for sure...

I think Findlay and Lima are seeing a mixture of sleet and snow. Both ASOSes are reporting unknown precipitation, but visibilities of 1/2 mi. I don't think sleet alone could lower visibility that much, so there must be snow mixed in.

I still think the cold air will hold on longer than expected with the frozen lake. This may be a case where the warm air penetrates to CLE then cuts two counties east... with cold to the E and W.

Just need a more easterly movement to the storm. It's going to be race between the warm air spreading north and the storm occluding to the east. The storm itself is pretty fast mover so that should help. Who knows though.

Looks like precip is starting to expand on the radar.

Maybe its just my weenie eyes looking at the radar... but the rain line does not appear to pushing north all that rapidly. If the timing of the occlusion works out right... alot of areas that were supposed to turn over are going to stay frozen as the colder air rushes east -- insert 50 weenie symbols.

The precip shield seems to be taking on a more E/W pattern as well. If winds can stay NE'erly perhaps the low level cold air can hold tight. Looking like a heck of an ice storm for parts of OH.

How would he get onto the topic of not liking candles? lol "Make sure you have plenty of flashlights handy. I don't like candles."

He was talking about be prepared if the power goes out with candles, but that he doesn't like candles. Oh, and he said make sure if you're not in the room with them you blow them out. Yep, total whack job.

Maybe I would have to see the video to comment, but he could just be talking from a fire safety standpoint... ?

ILN just updated our warning saying an additonal 1/4" of ice. Starting to catch on....

So here is my question, and I would love to hear anyone's thoughts. We should get above freezing tonight, BUT it looks like the majority of rain will be over by then. Therefore, we don't have as much rain falling above 32 degrees to help wash away the ice on the trees. How much can melt by time the winds get here? I'm thinking not a ton with temps only in the upper 30s to 40 degrees for just a few hours. We may have serious tree/power problems in the Columbus area.

I know you or someone on here has had the typical WTOD precip pattern in their sig... this definitely not the typical precip pattern we are used to seeing. My wife said that precip started as a mix then to mostly snow.

My current update my site:

Warm air that was supposed to push in appears at this time to be limited. The cold air coming in from the north and west appears to be overpowering the warm surge from the southwest. I am looking for the rain/frozen line to set up just south of I-70, which will cause heavy icing throughout the night north of I-70. Wings tomorrow morning will reach 25-30mph with gusts of up to 40mph. The wind combined with the heavy icing will result in downed trees and powerlines and loss of power to many across Central Ohio.

Have some sleet mixed in right now... wasn't expecting that.

850's have to be falling then. At least I would think. It is just pouring the zr right now. It wont take long to add up at this rate and the wind is picking up.. Not sure if this is accurate, but this looks like a tell tale sign that the cold is winning
