lilj4425
So that's where all the hot...errr...cold air from Brick Tamland's complaining went.
Poimen
lol...good one guys! What I want to know is this: how much stinking money does it cost to buy that "sonic anemometer?" Is this why the prices for Grandfather are so stinking high?
nchighcountrywx
I reported that yesterday in the Observation Thread: http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php?/topic/10776-jan-2526-observations/page__view__findpost__p__373532
FoothillsNC
I'm not sure I take the high winds on Grandfather as perfectly accurate. I know yesterday the 5H was directly overhead and there was good momentum transfer jumping the mountains so that would argue for a very high reading but sometimes they just look "too" high. I understand they changed the setup of the instruments though, maybe they're more accurate now.
EmersonGA
I thought I heard that they moved the wind sensor to try and make it more accurate. I may be wrong though.
nchighcountrywx
Keep in mind guys, even on a summer afternoon on Grandfather mountain, it is not unusual to have fresh afternoon winds gusting above 45. I have experienced it countless times while hiking the Grandfather Trail.
eyewall
They did move the anemometer to try and mitigate false readings but I fully believe the 114 mph gust. Eventhough the station read high in the past there is no question some of those were still in excess of 100mph. It is a different world on the ridge lines.
