Billabong
Not really... where's the rain? GFS has been consistent with about 1/2 in today into tonight. Rain bust. I posted that on Tuesday... when it looked somewhat impressive. Models backed off on the severe threat thereafter. We did have a few strong storms around. One supercell-like storm in northern Gates County had some decent midlevel rotation for a time with a nice hook.
USN Ben
Hi all, just wanted to check in and say hello being new around here. I'm from the Seattle area, but am spending the summer in VA Beach for training. Definitely one hell of a climate change, that's for sure. I've already seen more thunderstorms in the last couple weeks here than I have in a year in the Pacific Northwest.

Billabong
Has anyone else noticed how warm KECG has been lately? I checked surrounding mesonet sites and they are always warmer as well. Elizabeth City is closing in on a 10" deficit... im guessing the drought may have a lot to do with it.
RIC Airport
Picked up an old college friend that flew into PHF from BOS late Friday evening. We spent the weekend together. Must say, despite being quite humid, the weather turned out to be really nice. It was nice going to Busch Gardens, the Va Beach Oceanfront, downtown Norfolk and the ODU campus to reflect our past in the area.
DMADKAT
Everyone is saying its gonna get hot this week. God I hope they are wrong. Summers like last year are hell when you work outside. DMADKAT
102 at ORF yesterday. 10:00 reading today is 91. Yesterday it was 92 at 10:00. Today the dew point is 2 degrees lower at 74 than yesterdays at 10:00 which was 76. That little dryer air could add a few more degrees on to todays high. 103 or 104 maybe. All this going on with a south wester blowing ! AMAZING. A west wind would have fried the all time records yesterday . Like that reading of 108 in Newark NJ . DMADKAT
95 now at ORF with dew point of 74 at 11:00 hour. Yesterday it was 95 with dew point of 75 at 11:00. Today and yesterday is running neck and neck now. I AIN'T GOT TO WORK OUTSIDE ON THIS ONE!

DMADKAT
This is only the second time in my 49 year life that we had two 102 degree or higher temps twice in a row in Norfolk Virginia. Only last years pair of 105's(July 24 and 25, 2010 ) has that ever happened before, and I've lived here all my life . These last two summers are indeed unreal. Hot summers and cold winters go hand in hand . I work outside for a living and believe me ,I know. so be ready . This winter is very likely to be a cold one. USN Ben
Tornado warning for Norfolk proper right now. Some very disturbing rotation on radar, this is a healthy storm. It's headed straight for me in VA Beach next. My first tornado ever. Very strange feeling.

It's headed straight for me in VA Beach next. My first tornado ever. Very strange feeling. I was right under the rotation as it came onshore. I really wish it had been daylight. I suspect there was at least a waterspout. Winds were 50-60mph for about 4-5min. Some intense weather tonight.
Billabong
3 large outflow boundaries (one coming down the Peninsulas, one going east across Sussex, and one coming north from the storms in NE NC) collided over Surry, Isle of Wight, and Newport News. Of course, once they did, convection blew up and shot eastward toward Norfolk (the only direction without incoming outflows). Interesting evening. RIC Airport
And I'm amazed at how ORF has virtually wiped out its yearly rainfall deficit. With 9.54" so far this month, you're only about an inch away from breaking into the to 10 wettest Julys on record. The heat the last couple of summers has indeed been impressive. You gotta remember, ORF went 10 years....A FULL 10 YEARS, 1995 to 2005, without hitting 100 degrees a single time. The last two summers have really been racking up the 100 degree numbers. Billabong
Here we go again. Another Great Dismal Swamp fire billowing a ton of smoke into the area. Apparently started by a lightning strike last Thursday. Judging by the fact this thing over doubled in size in the past 24 hours to 2,500 acres, and the chance of rain today not looking very impressive with dry conditions until Saturday.... were going to be with this problem for quite a while. You can see the plume stretching from VB, up the Chesapeake Bay, across the Eastern Shore, and out pretty far into the Atlantic. whats going on? looks like aug will be quite a bit cooler starting thursday. We will finally be seeing normal temperatures (86°F is the average) for this time of year.
