I think they fudged the liquid equivalent at JFK to match the reported snowfall and a 10:1 ratio. I've seen this done in past storms where the ASOS didn't properly melt the snow and liquid equivalents in the METARs were way off.

lol so in the case of JFK they got the liquid equivalent and the snowfall amt wrong.

Agreed. Obs like these from JFK - 3 straight hours of 1/8 mi or less visibility - cast even more doubt

on their snowfall report. Their visibilities were lower than LGA and EWR for all three of these obs. Perhaps

the strong winds contributed to the relatively lower visibilities, but considering how wet the snow was I doubt it.

There's no way they should have less than 15, and they probably should have broken 18" based on the radar and those reports. It looked even more impressive there than here at times, and I had over 16".

the only video i have from last night is the sleet t-storm. Like nothing I have ever heard before with the wind driven sleet.

Do you think we might have actually gotten hail in that, considering there were reports of pea sized hail in C NJ?

25.5 here as of this AM, probably will be more like 23-24 by the end of the day.

It's 16-18" in my front yard, and well over two feet in my back yard. I wonder if we will have reports of roof cave ins due to the wetness of the snow? There was some scattered tree damage here too because of the snow on branches.

I think we have a strong consensus from you, me, noreaster, ace and doug for the following storms:

Dec 26-27.... JFK 15.5 US 18-19

Jan 12.... JFK 6.2 US 9-10

Jan 26-27..... JFK 10.3 US 16-17

LOL - a roof is just about the worst possible place to measure snow, especially when there are strong winds.

There is one event in there where they didnt even attempt a measurement, and that was the one where it went from snow to sleet to zr. We had 1.5 or so... so it wasnt much but when we tried to find out what happened we were told that the FAA had told the contract observer to "immediately cease" all snow measuring procedures. To the credit of the NWS, they somehow managed to get the FAA to change its mind. But now if they could only get them to measure in a more representative spot (that is, anywhere but a roof lol.)

we had 3-4 yesterday morning, are they even including that? It makes it a little closer but still off.

The funny thing is, they are. Apparently, the "official" measurement is 2.8 from yesterday morning and 7.5 from last night. The 12 inches snowcover figure includes a 3" snowdepth before the event began (there was some compacting.)

I want to say it was the New Years Eve event a couple of years ago where JFK reported nothing and people right nearby had 3 inches?

Haha, that was another one. We had one like that again in Feb 2009, when they had 0.3 and we had snow plows out-- and as you know, snow plows only come outt for over 2 inches (it was actually like 4 inches.) The number was adjusted later.

But no, the FAA actually told them to stop measuring earlier this month and they only started reporting again on the 20th. The snow to sleet to zr event was about a week and a half ago. It snowed 1 AM to 4 AM and sleet/zr fell from about 4 AM to 7AM and then it switched over to rain. There was about 1.5" inches of snow between 1 AM and 4 AM with rates of about half an inch per hour.

It was the storm where you said that if it had occurred in the late 80s or early 90s everyone would be excited, but because of the kind of winter we were having the board was pretty quiet.

Too bad we didn't go for the trifecta and verify a sleetnado as well. :(

I want to see that and a snownado one day! How awesome something like that would be-- a tornado wrapped in a wall of white! It would probably look like a dust devil with snow lol

Do a search for "roof collapse" in Google News and you'll see there have been several in the past 2 days over the Northeast, mainly in southern New England.

I have snow somewhere in the bottom of the snowpack that won't probably melt away until March or April. The highest snow mound I have on my driveway is close to 4 feet. It looks like a snowcave in my front yard. This is just surreal.

The plows plow me in so bad that I have to stack up snow ridiculously high. 4 feet is nothing. I have some piled up 8 to 10 feet high. I have no clue what I'd do if we get another big storm ... there simply is no more room.

One of these days one of those snow towers is going to collapse and kill someone.

Can it go somewhere else? I think 57 inches for one winter is enough.

It is never enough.

I saw roughly 90" last winter, and 4 MECS/HECS (I travelled back to DC for when they got more--saw 20.5" on 12/19, 6.5" on 1/30, 27" on 2/5, then back in NYC saw 10" with 2/11 and 20" with 2/25). I've seen another two HECS this winter (24" with 12/27 and 19" with this past storm, as well as the 8-9" with the 1/7 event).

I've seen roughly 150" since last December, SEVEN MECS+, and 4 storms with over 20" (almost 5).

Still, I WANT MORE. NEVER ENOUGH!!! Although it's wonderful as is. :)
