A-L-E-X
well i would think it compacted a bit...but 13.5" from part 2.....16.7" total...THAT IS INSANE. freaken 5 hour lull and 2 1/2 hrs of sleet...or else we get 20" yesterday! That plus the sleet/ZR.... if that first batch of convection had come in pure snow.... imagine what would have been!
forkyfork
So EWR got 19.1" of snow and sleet out of 1.82" of liquid. Ratio of about 10.5:1 which considering some fell as sleet isn't too bad. Amazingly I don't think any model had QPF of over 1.5" when it comes to these events, it's better to look at model forecast mid level frontogenesis and paint the excessive totals there. Chris L
That plus the sleet/ZR.... if that first batch of convection had come in pure snow.... imagine what would have been! Alex, I think most of the area had sleet-zr prior to the changeover, scary to imagine how much we would have gotten, yes, you are correct.
jconsor
That snow cover map is heavily tainted by the low JFK measurement in the areas you mentioned. I'm not sure the JFK measurement is as off as some believe, however. Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn only had 13", and Oceanside only 12". The Sheepshead Bay measurement was from a trained spotter, and the Oceanside measurement is from a trained spotter and former NWS coop observer. definitely low for Brooklyn, Queens and Nassau ctys
A-L-E-X
definitely low for Brooklyn, Queens and Nassau ctys That 16-17 inch range that we've all measured is probably a good range for us, plus 3 inches of previous snowcover, so a snowdepth of about 20" Seasonal snowfall is now up to 55" here. ace0927
I just came and measured all over my front and back yard (and my neighbor's too-- but that's another story lol)..... that 19.4 was the high amount, so Im going to submit a second report adjusting the total downward. Here are the 10 measurements I got (I subtracted 3 inches for snowcover): 19.4 18.7 16.4 16.3 16.1 15.8 15.5 14.9 14.3 13.2 Note the cluster between 15.5 and 16.4..... likely the correct total is in there somewhere (this includes the 3 inches from earlier, but not the 3 inches of snowcover preceding the event.) bam- my 16"+ estimate is right on! Sock Puppet
13" is far too low. FreeRain
Number of 19"+ snowstorms at Central Park since 1996: 6. Amazing. Also amazing, I've had six 12 - 18" snowfalls since December 2009. I assume you have the same in Huntington?

Here's some food for thought for those who think NYC "cant have 100" of snow in a season-- we have had 93" already from Feb 1, 2010 thru today-- and we can actually have over 100" in a 365 day period if we get a couple inches from the clipper and the snowstorm next week pans out, because we didnt get our first big snow in Feb until the 10th! All this with a snowless March 2010!

jm1220
What an incredible storm-took forever to shovel!! Those snow rates last night were just insane. We must have easily had 4" per hour snow for a few hours during the worst of it. I generally measured between 16 and 17 inches earlier this morning, so I'm going with 16.5" total. I wonder how much water made this much snow-it was very thick, so it has to be something like 10-1.

What's your seasonal total? 55" here.

I agree. when you put that frontogenesis map up from the NAM on Tuesday night showing the "black blob" over my house I knew we had a good shot for something big. jm1220
I submitted 16.4... nice number? It's near the cluster of those 10 measurements. That 10" from JFK is definitely wrong, but in a perverse way, I'd love them to bust extremely low like this because it makes the error so much more obvious lol. I think 16" is actually a good number for this storm, Ace measured 16.2 and some dude from Long Beach measured 15.9 JM measured over 18 but his first measurement was probably in a slight drift, like mine was. You're right. I went out again around 7:00 ish this AM and measured between 16 and 17" in more protected spots. But still, 16, 18, whatever, what a friggin' storm. We'll probably remain in the same pattern for the next 10 days, but I doubt we will remain in the same pattern for the next 2 1/2 months. Most likely KNYC won't even break its 95-96 record. But I wouldn't "bet my job" that it won't.
