baroclinic_instability
To Snowgoose: snincr means how much last hour/total on ground so 5/19 means 5" last hr and 19" total on ground. "The ISP observer might have mean 4/019 and not 5/019....4/019 is simply that 19 inches is on the ground"

dbc
Historic night. Truly amazing. I must turn in for the night though as I am not optimistic about my office closing but who knows. Glad I got to share this experience with all of you snowhounds. Visibilities improving, snow lightning up, plows scurrying. Totals here are likely in line with EWR or more likely Teterboro. Good night snow weenies.

Around 4 early this afternoon, 4.5 in the evening, and 9" at midnight puts me at 16 in north Stratford. Your depiction of the midnight to 1:15 rate is perfect and what I kept going to 1:45 though it has eased up a lot now (compared to before). These are the types of storms that are studied/researched and published both because of intensity/impact, but also because of the forecast challenge and the extreme meso forcings apparent in this storm. JERSEYSNOWROB
SACRUS, to answer your question from previous thread. It was hard to tell what I got in first batch because I was at work all day out in Mercer County and didn't get home till 6:30ish and there was only about 2 inches left. So who knows what we really got. It looks like Colts Neck and Manalapan had about 4 so I'm guessing we had about that much too. The 11.5 inches that I measured tonight around 2am was all new snow from the 2nd part of the storm as I cleared off the earlier slush before the 2nd portion began. Still coming down so I'm sure we are over a Foot already.
A-L-E-X
Anyway, continuing that little saga about JFK, its no wonder the FAA was trying to pull the plug on the guy measuring the snow there a couple of weeks ago. As some of you may have noticed (something which Ray brought to my attention) they have no snow measurement for the mixed bag event that dropped 1-2 inches here. Well, the FAA was going to drop their contract observer and no longer measure snowfall there but the NWS managed to persuade them to not discontinue snowfall measurements there. I just wish they were a bit more represenative of the region as there is no way the snowfall totals could be that low with 4 straight hours of heavy snow with 0.1 or 0.0 visibility! We have widespread reports of 16-18.
