tmagan
WILL MENTION NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS ACROSS EASTERN AREAS...BUT DUE TO THE HEAVY WET NATURE OF THE SNOWFALL WHERE THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW SHOULD BE SOMEWHAT LIMITED. THEREFORE WILL NOT UPGRADE TO BLIZZARD WARNINGS. This is from NWS Upton...Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't wet snow not have anything to do with blizzard criteria? I thought it's only visibility of less 1/4 mi or less and winds of 35 mph for 3 consecutive hours? Wet snow is not as easy to blow around as a drier snow and therefore doesn't affect visibility as much.

Manny
Was getting light sleet down here on the lower east side, but it is now switching over to light snow. Yeah, it was sleeting for a while, should be light snow now.

RU848789
Earthlight - is that WeatherTap radar available to the public? When I try to go to the site, it looks like it's just a place the graphics are hosted and it won't update for me. You or anyone else: I have to admit I'm not sure if the NWS discussions I've seen from Philly/NYC offices mean 8-12" more snow or not. Most of their area has received 4-6" of snowfall so far, so 8-12" total snowfall would be an additional 4-6", whereas the discussions certainly makes it sounds like there could be 1-2"/hour snows for ~9 hours and the point-and-clicks for most of I-95 are talking about 2-4" this afternoon with 5-9" tonight, which, on top of 4-6" would be about 11-19" not 8-12" total. Their snowfall maps also look like 8-12" total snowfall. Even if one didn't count the 2-4" for the "late afternoon" 5-9" tonight on top of 4-6" already fallen would be 9-15" total. Am I missing something? Here's my obs: when I left Metuchen for work around 11:30 am, we had 4.0" of new snow. My wife kindly measured 1.5" of snow on the back table on our deck that I cleared off a before I left, so I'll put our total at 5.5" for Part One of the storm. Quite an appetizer - hope the main course is overfiling (Monty Pythonesque - "one wafer thin mint" - kind of overfilling, lol). Right now we have a mix of snow and sleet falling relatively lightly here in Rahway and 33F (Weather bug says it's 30F in Pway and 31F in NB - sounds inconsistent with 33F in RY - not sure whether to trust W-bug). OK, thanks for the info. Any chance you could answer my other question about how much additional snow we're getting, according to the NWS forecasts? Find it hard to believe if we have 4-6" already down in most places that our overall total will only be 8-12" (4-6" more), given what I've read in the AFD's and the mesoscale discussion from the SPC (and even the point and clicks, which imply another 5-9" at least). snowman21
LGA/JFK/NYC had no trouble getting down to 1/4 mi visibility even with the wet snow today. True, but not worth pulling the trigger on a warning that has a very low probability of verifying. Blizzard warnings in NWS Eastern Region have a false alarm rate of about 70%. jconsor
The parallels to 12/5-6/03 are uncanny. I'm starting to wonder if totals for this event may rival that one - shorter duration of snow but heavier snowfall rates with the upper low may make up for that.\ Anyone else think storm totals of 16" are possible in some of the heavier bands?
