You are always full of info--thanks!

And I'll take two solidly below-normal winters in a row--even if this year's snowfall was less than I would have hoped for during a cold winter. Hopefully the cold is the beginning of a trend and the snow will follow!

Here are the top 15 coldest. Last winter finished at 36.9°F

Top 15 Coldest Winters (DJF) at Richmond (since 1897)

1. 32.2°F (1935-36)

2. 33.1°F (1917-18)

3. 34.0°F (1904-05)

4. 34.1°F (1939-40)

5. 34.2°F (1976-77)

6. 34.4°F (1977-78)

7. 34.6°F (1903-04)

8. 35.1°F (1962-63)

9. 35.2°F (1919-20)

10. 35.7°F (1911-12)

11. 35.8°F (1995-96)

12. 35.9°F (1968-69)

13. 36.3°F (2002-03)

14. 36.4°F (1947-48)

15. 36.5°F (1901-02)

And just for fun, here are the season snowfall totals for those winters.

1.1935-36: 28.6"

2.1917-18: 33.7"

3.1904-05: 19.0"

8. 1962-63: 16.9"

9. 1919-20: 17.2"

10.1911-12: 21.6"

11.1995-96: 28.3"

12.1968-69: 15.9"

Looks to be quite a soaker coming up.....still could use the rain so this is good news.

No doubt. This is very good for this spring season at work. As of last week, Chesterfield County's Drought Team was talking about meeting. I'm guessing it's been put on hold.

  • 2 weeks later...

Good line of thunderstorms to the northwest. If you look outside it is a pretty good light show.

Rolling through now and had some pretty good lightning bolts across the sky. 80* days and thunderstorms last 4 days and we've got days upcoming where we might struggle to hit 50* ... I guess now we know what New England feels like in late April and early May, LOL...

Haha yeah

Tried to take some pictures, missed all the good cloud to ground bolts that were close enough to be above the trees. I had it set on a 4-8 second exposure but I missed every one right after the shutter closed. I'll post what I got once this is over.

I really can't decide if I want it to snow or not. It won't help my pocketbook any, since it's not a school day (wife's still on maternity leave, snow days don't count), and I've already got my vegetable garden planted (just cold weather crops, so I'm not too worried)...

dusting of hail on the driveway next to the james river cherokee rd area

12z nam snowfall

It's always tough to get snow this time of the year....but of course it CAN happen, and accumulate, too. 2006 and 2007 both saw late March early April accumulations officially at RIC. Precip at night of course is ideal.

1.0" on April 7, 2007

0.9" on March 21, 2006

0.1" March 31, 2003

Some more notable very late season events....

10.0" April 3-4, 1915

8.4" March 26, 1971

7.8" March 20, 1914

7.2" March 30-April 1, 1964

6.9" March 27-28, 1947

It has snowed as late as April 28th in RIC's recorded history.

I started unrolling my plastic sheeting today to lay over my pea fences... I'm feeling really bad for the stuff that's not in my vegetable garden... hostas, hydrangeas, Japanese maples, tulips... my poor plants!

:yikes:
