Hey guys... I just took a look at some SPC mesoanalysis charts... This precip is actually being caused by a high amount of vorticity advection in association with a small but sharp little shortwave embedded in the 500 mb flow.. It looks like overrunning but there is no sign of any thermal advection at this time... Perhaps this subtle shortwave was not picked up well by the models..

There is convective signatures to our southwest in southern NJ/DE/MD moving northeastward, radar confirms this with a lot of dynamics still riding up with this initial batch. Though it's becoming hard to call it "initial" since this has been becoming more and more consolidated...

Guest Patrick

could this subtle shortwave be the feature that the NAM and some others have been exploding off to our southeast for the past several runs? Just thinking that it may eventually rob batch #2 of some energy...

The shortwave is actually located in central PA and is propagating east so this feature really almost seems like it's own little mini type storm before the main show tonight

2" of new snow on the ground in Metuchen - awesome surprise. Local roads are in bad shape (just dropped my son off at school) and even the highways are not in great shape, since the snow is falling faster than it's melting (temps are around freezing). I assume the total snowfall predictions will be simply upped by 3-4" to maybe 8-12" region wide...

what in the blue hell is going on...i just woke up and its snowing heavily and there's a lot of snow on the ground :o

Looks like the first batch thats come through is a good deal stronger then the models were expecting, the orginal values estimated are very likely too low for the whole thing yet alone the first batch...
