Freezing drizzle / rain is the worst! People just don't know how to drive in it and I am sure it is worse than normal down that way.

And you would be correct. Traveling down I-10 westbound between Barker Cypress Blvd. and Fry Rd. there were several vehicles who lost control and crashed up against the guard rail. In their defense however, I have now learned just how easy it is to lose control of a vehicle once you hit a patch of ice. I skidded twice on two back-to-back overpasses even though I was not traveling very fast at all. Fortunately, I was able to maintain control both times and did not spin out of control. After that, I quickly exited the freeway since I had two more overpasses to pass over.

If you check out this link right now, you can see what I am talking about...

Being out on the road tonight I can tell you first hand what is happening is people are being lulled into a false sense of security because the roads appear 'normal'. I got on I-10 at I-45 and traveled westbound. Everything was smooth sailing for everyone all the way until we reached Park Ten and Barker Cypress. (I think the same thing is happening on Highway 290 as well.) That's the area I think a lot of people got caught of guard and began to slide and lose control. That's why you see more accidents on the west side of town as compared to the east side. Obviously, the west side road overpasses are beginning to ice over due to incoming drizzle from the west/southwest. As in most cases, I think people need to realize that you have to really slow down in these conditions even though the road appears 'safe' at that point of the highway. There were quite a few people not necessarily speeding, but simply driving too fast for these type of road conditions.

Official temps for MMMY had 37 continous hours of temps not going above freezing. That marks the coldest air mass since Dec 1989. Also, many cities in the North and northeast broke their all time records from at least Dec 1989 (or like Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua, ever). Tampico had a low of 2C (36 F), coldest since Dec 1989 too.

Around 98%+ of the homes in MX doesn't have house heating, other than portables. We had a blackout tonight, so this happened in my house (temps hovered around 22F and 24F for more than 10 hours):

Also, as sun reappeared and things began to defrost, lots of water began to fall from the roof of my house and some neighbor's houses :(.

For the record, Austin had about a quarter inch of ice followed by snow grains followed by light snow. Probably about 3/4 inch accumulation of snow here in southwest Austin. The mixture was enough to shutdown the city this morning with many businesses and most schools closed.

Will it happen again next week?

What's the coldest temperature ever observed in Mexico? What were the specific records broken? I'd love to see a list if you have one, or point me to the right place.

I was particularly impressed by the 1F at MMCU this morning -- you know if it got colder between the hour? Also station 76220-- Temosachic-- at 6100 ft, reported -4F. Even in the southern Baja station 76402 reported 35. brrrr

It's not easy to get info from MX records... but I use this http://smn.cna.gob.mx/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=42&Itemid=75. Saltillo, Chihuahua and Ciudad Juarez are some of the cities that broke their all time records. Chihuahua and Saltillo completely smashed their previous records. Saltillo is just 50 miles from here, but at 4500 ft.
