skierinvermont
Good stuff .. I posted Francis et al. 2009 in the climate forum on Eastern a few months ago. It's interesting because ice melt causes a -NAO but a -NAO also correlates with less ice loss in the future. Negative feedback loop. Of course all the correlations are weak. It's weak enough that I think they may have some sample size problems, although it does make some physical sense as well (ice melt warms the arctic in fall and early winter, causing a smaller T differences between the midlatitudes). bluewave
The latest Arctic Report Card has a nice discussion on this topic also. http://www.arctic.no...atmosphere.html
bombogenesis
But no! It's obviously the lack of sun spots and solar flares that cause the negative NAO!
nynjpaweather
But no! It's obviously sun spots and solar flares that cause the negative NAO! Actually, the ice loss is more of a feed back mechanism than a forcing mechanism. But hey, ignore one of the most important influences on Earth's climate.
