Tropopause_Fold
warm layer in the 850-700mb layer sneaking in around here? 1000-500mb thicknesses look around 544dm and 850-700mb around 154-155 dm. yeah 700 mb temps are relatively mild so my guess is there's a tongue of "warmer" air in that layer. HIPPYVALLEY
it will be interesting to see what happens if you get this snowfall and then another snowstorm within day 10. theyll have to start trucking the snow out of the harder hit burbs/city area. i wonder if we will begin seeing snow removal equipment being sent down from here? After the last big storm (the snow to ice event) Greenfield had some industrial snow thrower machines from VT clearing the downtown into dump trucks. I would think Boston could just dump it in the harbor?
CT Rain
Wow, GFS is an absolute pounding for a lot of areas. Yeah that's 15" of mashed potatoes for me and kevin lol
grinch1989
Yes sir, but whoa... Man we are close on this run, but nice to see things crashing back to snow after whatever else falls.
Kbosch
Many of the larger towns in CT are already doing that We have had dump trucks hauling it away. We will need more with this storm.
Mr. Windcredible!
looks like the 12z GFS gets just a bit just a tad too warm near the shoreline in CT from BDR on east. Some sleet to start out, then some fzra/ra. Good news is heights crash and it turns over to what would probably be several inches of heavy wet snow on the tail end. Kbosch
Man we are close on this run, but nice to see things crashing back to snow after whatever else falls. I can't wait to see the bufkit on this. I would take a mess near the start if we can crash back to that for a pounding. If we hold the Euro again, game on. Clinch Leatherwood
It's amazing how the Euro and GFS have our area right on the snow/sleet line..I'd like the Euro to trickle colder again today The euro does not model the dip in heights over the central lakes that the gfs has at 0z 1/27. It will be interesting to see if that's a real deal, last main run the gfs had it 600 miles sw.
sankaty
On this run it looks like we'd mix with sleet for a time here, but would still get a lot of snow. Right on the edge, though. Middletown has already been trucking snow of the main streets. Don't know where they've been putting it.

ORH_wxman
Yeah that's 15" of mashed potatoes for me and kevin lol It might not even be that wet....the sfc temps in the interior stay in the mid 20s.
CT Rain
It might not even be that wet....the sfc temps in the interior stay in the mid 20s. looks like we flirt with sleet issues though with some fairly toasty temps around 850mb...

If we hold the Euro again, game on. I think you're not too bad per the GFS. Just extrapolating from the HVN sounding data, at least half of what falls is SN up your way...maybe more. CoastalWx
It might not even be that wet....the sfc temps in the interior stay in the mid 20s. Yeah it could be sort of average snowgrowth, but look at how the qpf explodes with the ULL approaching. That's pretty cool, and it would probably be awesome snowgrowth when that comes over. If i tip, that would probably flip over to some nasty dendrites for a time.

This a regular practice after snowstorms. They do it here after every storm, including the piles in parking lots. What they can't plow/shovel/haul away they melt. sankaty
Yeah that's 15" of mashed potatoes for me and kevin lol Think it would be mashed potatoes with surface so cold (looks like mid/upper 20s)? Is snow wetness/dryness governed more by mid-level temps?
CT Rain
Not exactly a classic sleet setup for us with a rapidly deepening/closing 850mb and 700mb low underneath us. Have to think we'd tick colder in mid levels.

ORH_wxman
W. Ma. N of the Pike should rock with decent ratios. Its all about snow growth for ratios....not sfc temps. I've had awful snow growth with sfc temps int he teens and great snow growth with sfc temps at 33F.If you start getting above freezing that can limit ratios, but even at about 30F, you can get great ratios.
