Best weather/radar software?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious as to how much the dual-Pol add-on will be for GR. I'm guessing whatever the price is, I'll pay for it.

Gibson Ridge already did the programming for it, in anticipation for the upgrades to the WSR-88D's starting this year through 2012.

$125 for the individual license, $250 for the commercial.

This program is great, incredibly customizable, and it's free.

GR does a lot more but if you're looking for freebie stuff, weatherscope is arguably the best free tool out there.

Gibson Ridge's software is top notch (I used GRLevel3 during the beta phase), but for a freebie, it's hard to beat WeatherScope. I've been using it for a couple of years now.

@whiteoutwx - thanks for the link to SimuAwips. I've missed that software somehow. I'll have to give it a shot.

Edit: SimuAwips is nice, very nice. Thanks again for the link, whiteoutwx.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just asked the SimuAwips creator if he can implement winter mosaic reflectivity and he responds:

Hey, that sounds like a good idea actually! :-)

Such a good idea in fact, that this morning I coded up a new script (borrowing examples from Unidata) which will bring all new Precipitation Typed Mosaics (Rain, Sleet and Snow colorization) into SimuAWIPS beginning in the next release. They look very nice so far.

Stay Tuned!

I'm going to go as far as to say that SimuAwips has some features that are much better than grlevel, and for free too!

Just brought this up in another thread, glad to see it mentioned here too. Rumor is SimuAwips is also implementing most of the major models (unk if true or not). Gr3 is practical on a storm chase as you really don't need all the "eye candy". If you are watching from home though I recommend Gr2 and Gr2AE. The detail you see is amazing. Don't discount StormLab either. It was created by Evan Bookbinder (a met for NWS EAX) I currently have GR3 and StormLab and use them religiously. SimuAwips is something I just started using more and really like it.... especially if they utilize the SPC mesoanalysis page into their product.

What other thread is discussing this?

Thanks.

I also asked him if he can make a application for android users/iphone users. Let's see what he says. It would be phenomenal to have the access mobile.

Absolutely! I know Mike Brady (from stormtrack) has implemented a few mobile programs and is actually developing a pretty sweet radar program... let me get you the links.

If you search the Android Market on your phone (assuming you have a droid) and search "storm chaser" or "mike brady". Not sure how far along the two links I provided are in terms of availability, but there seems to be heavy interest.

You can almost get the same thing for free...

I use GRLevel3 for my website, you can see the current FFC radar here. http://www.daculawea...el3/ffc_284.php Since there is currently nothing on the radar, I'm displaying METAR info. Bad weather arrives I turn that layer off and activate others. There is a lot more that you can do and see on the actual client software than what appears in the display on the website.

Here are a few sites with add-ons for GRLevel software:

Simuawips looks like something I'll keep on my laptop. Excellent free application. And if i have to, I can VNC back into my GRlevel3 computer!

The best part about SimAwips is you can access it from anywhere. You don't have to download anything (just remember your log in info) it utilizes from your internet browser. I haven't tried to access it from my phone yet, but I am sure if you have a smart phone you may be able to toy around with it.
