A-L-E-X
Winds were over 50 mph every hour between 5 am and 3 pm with heavy rain (with sustained over 30.) This was an amazing storm-- the earth literally shook, well my house did anyway, (the squall line was actually anticlimactic though)-- much more impressive than the 4.0 earthquake yesterday. A-L-E-X
This storm was reminiscent of the mid March storm, although not as strong.
tmagan
Doubtful. We have at least a few inside track storms even in a good winter. I'd guess we touch 60 in NYC on average of at least 2-3 times over the Dec/Jan/Feb period. Even in our most snowiest winter in NYC and L.I., the majority of winter storms are either partially or all rain (maybe with the exception of 1996). That's what happens when you live on the coast. Getting a rainstorm in winter is pretty much inevitable, no matter how cold and snowy the overall winter is. We would pretty much need to have a strong block present for the entire season, which never happens. Plus even if it did, the cold air that would get funneled would eventually moderate and become stagnant. We saw this even in February 2010, sure it was cold enough for snow, but with the constant severe -NAO, -AO, the cold air was not renewed, but rather reused. So those snowstorms in February were very marginal at times because the blocking didn't allow us to get a renewed cold air mass.

Actually this past winter probably had much less rain than 1996. I wonder if they keep numbers on how much snow (liquid equivalent) versus snow fell in each winter. If you use the sum of DJF, last winter was about as good as it gets in terms of snow vs rain.
A-L-E-X
'96 is a tough call. Upton saw 91" that winter, but over 20" fell in November and April combined...typically very wet months... William, the storm in November only delivered about 3-4 inches here, did you get a lot more than that? If we just confine ourselves to DJF, I think the big warmup in Jan 1996 really hurts that year (especially with all the flooding rains we had after the big snowstorm.) It also hurts 08-09 since the big snowstorm that year was in March.
A-L-E-X
The also saw 10.9" of snow in December 2008 (giving them a total of 43.0" on the season) but it was a wet month with 4.37" liquid equivalent. Thanks for the calculations William! Can you come up with the best snow winter in terms of percentage of total precip? Maybe it was 04-05 out by Upton where they got like 80 inches of snow lol. A-L-E-X
Upton had about 4" in Nov and 16" in April.. Oh, I remember there being a snowstorm a few days before the big one in April that dropped like 5" at MTP-- thought you might have gotten in on that one also. A-L-E-X
You might be right. Dec 2004 - March 2005 Upton saw just under 79" of snow and a liquid equivalent under 11.0" so about 72% of the four month period's precip was in the form of snow, assuming 10:1 ratios... Holy! 72% sounds like about as good as it could ever get lol. I cant think of any other winter that I would put up against those numbers.

He got excited just before the March 09 storm and the anchors were throwing him angry stares. He's a million times better than any of the weather channel fake meteorologists who are about as knowledgeable as a high school dropout when it comes to weather. SnoSki14
The city has yet to drop to freezing, they should finally be able to this week, even in LGA, although I wouldn't be surprised if they don't make it, which would set new records. If highs are below 32 in the city this early in the season, you can bet the storm track will be suppressed. Below freezing highs in the city requires some pretty cold air. Sundog
First time this winter season that the park records a temp below 40 as of noon from the morning lows. Still holding at 39 in the park with full sunshine as of noon.
Diego
I think there's a reasonable chance that the temp. at CPK will drop to 32 or slightly below that by early tomorrow morning, based upon the amount of cold air advection, having reached 34 earlier today. ag3
I don't think LGA or maybe even NYC get to 32 or below tonight. I hope they do but LGA and NYC are still at 40 degrees. I'm at 36, at parents in law house in Whitestone. Only 3-4 miles east of LGA. LGA should get below freezing this weekend.
