NorthShoreWx
Believe it or not Tom, there use to be a "ski resort" in our area... http://en.wikipedia....ville,_New_York) Here is more information about a couple of defunct Long Island ski areas. The insurance must be atrocious, because I believe such an area could absolutely clean up if managed correctly. http://www.nelsap.org/ny/bald.html http://www.nelsap.or.../highpoint.html It's fun to read the old memories and in many cases misperceptions or details confused with other locations. Bald Hill isn't particularly close to the top of the list of high points on LI, but a lot of people evidently think that it is. Its around 300 and the high point is 401 feet, but there are many hill tops between 300 and 400. Speaking of 401 feet, I took a walk around West Hills the other day (Sunday):

A bit of a shock for me when a coupe of weeks ago it looked all but certain to be colder than normal. I have Dec pegged for -1 or more below normal but warth has been over performing since March.... Unc, I will actually finish about - 0.2 degrees for the month to break my streak. The last few nights radiated well outside urban areas so those plus departures should be greastest there. SnoSki14
I'm starting to think we will never register a below normal month, at least not based on the normals of the past 50 or so years, we may have to narrow things down to the last 15-20 years for normals because our temperatures are much higher than they were 30+ years ago. Stormlover74
One thing I've been noticing is it seems the temps have struggled more than usual to drop at night in the urban areas. For example New Brunswick is running 1.5 degrees below normal whereas EWR will end up a degree above I'm starting to think we will never register a below normal month, at least not based on the normals of the past 50 or so years, we may have to narrow things down to the last 15-20 years for normals because our temperatures are much higher than they were 30+ years ago. It's pretty much a done deal that November finishes above normal, but for KNYC it will come in less than 1 degree above normal, which is pretty much considered within a normal range, rather than above. The same applies for ISP and BDR and maybe for JFK and EWR (those two will be very close to slipping past +1) wheras LGA will be closer to 2 degrees above normal for the month. So there definitely does seem to be something going on at LGA, although the most freqently given answer in this thread (various derivatives of "because LGA sucks") isn't helpful. The issue with LGA isn't that they are warmer than other locations...they've always been. The issue is the greater departures vs their own normals. It could be something particular about the recent weather pattern...or it could be an equipment change of some sort.

NEXtreme
I believe AlGreek said that their thermometer is surrounded by tarmac, that could have something to do with it. That wouldn't be a shocking, its insane...when you actually go look at where and how they're placed the thermometers, you realize ...how unreliable the data is. These photos highlight the locations of official climate thermometers, which -- if they're not missing altogether -- are intentionally placed near air conditioners, getting blasts from jet engines or near the tarmac. You won't believe your eyes. http://jonova.s3.ama...-corruption.pdf http://www.surfacestations.org/

ag3
Isn't JFK's on top of a roof of one of the building's in the airport? Thats a complete joke also as the building itself radiates heat, as heat rises. JFK's snow totals are majorly flawed because of this.

NEXtreme
Either those who put these thermometers in such ridiculous spots and taking the readings are very stupid with no common sense or they are doing it intentionally.
