PhatStorm
I was there in 1980 and no other storm I experienced comes close,m including 96 and 2009 & 10 in No Va. We were stranded for three days in Greenrun. Walked to 7-eleven for beer run and saw national Guard tanks roaming streets. Our weather gear were green trash bag coats with brown bags with eyes/nose/moth cut out hats. I remember the the 3rd day of the storm the local news showing a radar shot saying Va beach was the only location in the US reporting snow at the time. WxMan1
FWIW...the *official* COOP report from the station near ORF had 11.7" through 3 pm. Don't worry folks, I'm *sure* they got another 0.3" and then some since then, with more on the way. Highest daily snowfall for ORF since Dec 27th 1892 (17.5"). March of '80 had 8.1" on the 1st and 5.6" on the 2nd. Also a LOT more wind in the March '80 storm. Feb 6th 1980...ORF had 11.8" in one day; this will eclipse that one for sure. It was spitting only 10 minutes ago and now it looks like it wants to come down again.
Guest someguy
Long term? Ugh! Don't ask. Maybe one of you guys can write a paper on that. Euro so consistent earlier in the week...then loses the system (weaker/offshore)...while the GFS picks it up. Short term...probably the SREF...though (again) the QPF field from the SREF is often too "broad" west to east. 12Z NAM yesterday did NOT have enough deformation axis snow into ern VA, though the 18Z NAM did catch on a bit. We (NWS) are obviously going to be on the low end in terms of amounts east of Wakefield. BUT, we can all take solice in the fact that we got the "sweet spot" area nailed pretty well...while drying things out fairly rapidly west of I-95. When we briefed the EMs, we noted while deterministic amounts were in the 6-12" range, there would assuredly be the potential for more (depending on convective bands). yeah YESTERDAYS sref at 9z and 15z were waaaaaaaaaay too wet west of i-95 and so was the 18z NAM. I am sure Brain u saw the 18z nam turn MUCH wetter for central VA when compared to the 12z? THAT was why I had too Much snow too far west and Upped my snow forecast for RIC and west to Rte 15 you point about the disconnect is 100% correct. THIS time around I thought with the Low Bombing out THIS far south that the disconnect would NOT be a factor. clearly that assumption no matter how reasonable was wrong on my part I did MUCH better jhan other over eastern VA and the Bay and mentioned possible VBlizzard warning a few times here and over the FB page for lower MD eastern shore and se va... btw at 230pm out shovelling -- 5 meaurements all at 6.5"
