csnavywx
That's a good point. When we looked at it yesterday, the cross sections SE to NW showed a fairly weak "statically stable" environment, i.e. the momentum surfaces were ~ parallel to the saturated theta-e surfaces. Of course, as theses systems wind up off the ATLC coast, inevitably there always seems to be a pocket of theta-e folding with height (leading to slantwise or flat-out upright convection). Yeah, looks like it might be doing its dirty work with the bands over AKQ and CPK. Had a similar situation burn the forecast out here a few days ago in some spots, and ended up with similar snow rates as some of these guys are posting. These borderline situations always seem tricky, as they can go one way or another.
WxMan1
Wow...just took a measurement of 8.5" as of just before 11 am here at AKQ. That's about 2" or so in an hour. Nice big fluffy (dendritic) flakes. Rte 460 is moving along decently though, for now.

Martin
It's almost scary to walk outside. Wind is knocking huge snow clumps out of the trees. Sporadic branches coming down as well. We lost a small tree earlier when it snapped at the base.

Suffolkweather
Station 41001 (LLNR 635) - 150 NM East of Cape HATTERAS reporting south wind with gusts of 50 knots pressure falling at 29.32"
WxMan1
Looking at ob/radar trends, it really does look like one of the "sweet spots" will be much of the DELMARVA, including the southern end (Cape Charles, Kiptopeake) where a 340-350 low level wind could give that area a little Ches Bay enhancement. FWIW snow slackening a bit along the I-95 corridor...and even here at AKQ as the heavier bands are focusing east.
WeSuck
I'm with you. Snow was extremely heavy. Over 10 inches now Same here buddy! Just hit double digits! 10" inches now!!! BTW check the radar! Another huge band setting up to go right over us like the last one! This band may be what puts us over a foot!
SeanVA
http://www.ssd.noaa....s/flash-rb.html It's really moving east. I haven't picked up much, if any, accumulations since 9:30 or so and it's started to melt on the roads as we approach peak UV energy time (such as it is this close to the winter solstice)... Bastard jinxed us last night. Kudos to DT for bringing up the possibility of a Norfolk to Boston Special earlier this week on the radio show. Sure looks like that's what this is.
