RIC Airport
23 here this morning There's some December 1973 talks around so I decided to take a look at what that month featured for C VA. I was actually surprised at how great of a month it was. Richmond officially recorded 9.9" and two decent early season snowstorms....one on the 11th (4.9") and the 16th-17th (4.3"). The 16-17th event looks to have been the biggest, but it's apparent that the airport didn't fare too well when you look at numbers north and west of town. I'll have to take a look at the historical hourly observations to see what happened at the airport, but it looks like it could've been due to IP or ZR during the height of the event. Anyway, the piedmont of VA had a significant snowstorm. December 16-17, 1973 storm totals Charlotte Court House: 15.7" Palmyra: 14.5" Louisa: 14.0" Farmville: 13.5" Buckingham: 13.0" Ashland: 13.0" Brookneal: 10.3" Gordonsville: 8.5" Fort Pickett/Blackstone: 7.5" Clarksville: 6.5" Lawrenceville: 5.0" Richmond: 4.3" BTW, Reagan National Airport received 10.2" while Dulles got 9.5". It actually looks like the storm started off as rain after midnight on the 16th and struggled to changeover during the early afternoon hours. After a few hours of ZR, it finally starting snowing around 5pm. After that, it switched back and forth from SN, IP, and ZR for most of the night. Most of the day on the 17th featured light snows with just a couple of inches. So, I guess it just took a while to get the changeover east of town while the north and west scored. Looks like the Euro and GGEM are on board for a storm around the 8th-9th. GFS suppresses everything then turns warm Should be an interesting next few weeks with the -NAO block setting up and cold lurking nearby. My guess is someone is gonna have to cash in on this. Whether its the 40N crowd, or a little further south remains to be seen.

Midlo Snow Maker
0z euro for sunday there's a strip of 0.25-0.50" amounts across North Carolina to North Central Virgina. DC probably gets less than 0.10". The phase is literally a frame or two late. The storm then hooks and retrogrades into the Gulf of Maine.
