rainstorm
When we have to rely on re-development off Hatteras, we are too far south to get 12"+.....unless it just sits off the coast for a day like January 2000 did for RDU. if it redevelops off hatteras most of va isnt going to get much. rainstorm
http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/43206/light-snow-creates-slick-trave-1.asp says norfolk is in the 1-3 zone with icy roads tonight.
RIC Airport
if it redevelops off hatteras most of va isnt going to get much. Well....it depends, but RIC is much more favorable for accumulating snows than VA Beach. Remember, the snowfall climatology there is different from SE VA....it only correlates about half of the time. MidlothianWX
If the GFS is correct with its depiction of the Christmas storm, it would be a bowling-ball low setup. If I'm not mistaken, these are much more common during moderate-strong La Nina winters, which means they are slightly easier for the models to handle. Not saying this means that the current GFS depiction is accurate; however, it has more of a chance than any coastal we have seen pop up in the long range.
