I believe warning criteria for AKQ CWA is 4" or more. I guess I should know, but I can't remember what the official time frame, but I believe it maybe 24hrs. They have also issued heavy snow warnings for us, I believe February 11-12, 2006 was the last HSW issued for RIC metro. I don't know if they would ever put C VA under a blizzard warning, but I do know for the March 1993 superstorm the entire I-81 corridor.....all counties along and west of the Blue Ridge were under Blizzard warnings before the event even started.

I don't recall a storm 02/11-12 in 2006 for RIC.

12z GFS = excruciating with the weekend event. That wraparound on GFS is a fantasy. On to the GGEM/Euro.

Oh I agree, a solution like that verbatim and I am heading to Dover for some gambling, drinking and blizzard... But it is a little suspect solution in my opinion unless GGEM and EURO show something similar. If euro and GGEM hold on to OTS solutions then I will expect this GFS run to be throw out

DT just mentioned FEB 1983 in the 12z model thread for the weekend storm. If we could only get such a storm again as that storm dumped 18" officially at Richmond Airport. 13.3" of that fell in 24 hours. This is tired with January 5, 1980 as the 3rd highest single calendar day snowfall on record for Richmond. Only January 1940 and December 1908 featured higher 24hr totals.

LOL at Billabong for trying to make us feel better after the 12Z GFS RAIN STORM by posting Thursday's event.... Although that does look nice for 2-3 inches here

Actually, looking at ORF bufkit soundings, it starts off with sleet, quickly changes to rain, and is back to all snow by hour 120 giving us a good 12 hours or so of snow. ;)

Sign me up. But, damn, I need to go buy a snowblower in that case, ROFL.

We would likely break some old daily snowfall records if the event pans out as depicted on the 12z GFS. Current daily records for snow are....

12/19 5.8" (1919)

12/20 4.5" (1942)

Would be fun times. Big storms are always fun.

But, I'll be honest, unlike McGuirk who, seemingly, only gets excited by a 50" blizzard, I get excited just to see snow falling and accumulating, especially around Christmas. Yesterday morning was fantastic. I didn't have to shovel. I didn't have to do anything except watch it snow. I wish it had accumulated more, sure, but I'm perfectly content with 2-3" storms. If we got to 20" a year with 10 2" storms, I'd be very satisfied.

It would be wonderful if the 2010s are the twin of the 1960s. The area has had an amazing stretch since March 2009.....maybe blocking episodes similar to the 1960s will prevail for the next 10 years? That will mean a lot more snow for us......and when you look at history, our average comes from long term cycles (20-25 years) when snow levels are high or low. It might be safe to say that we are no longer in a minimum phase.
