Thursday: A chance of snow before 1pm, then a chance of rain and sleet. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. West wind between 8 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Thursday Night: A slight chance of freezing rain and sleet before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

No more mention of rain from our friends at AKQ this morning. Baby steps.

As of the 6:54am RIC observation, the official snowdepth was 1 inch. This will go down as the snowdepth for the entire day even if the snow melts later on. So, day #1 for snowcover days this season. For 2009-10 season, RIC had 22 days with a snowdepth of at least 1 inch which was the most since the 1965-66 season.

I'm hoping any snow that we do get holds off until at least 2pm Thursday. I have my last exam early Thurs morning and should be on my way down around 10:30am... hoping for a nice dry road.

Does anyone else see the similarities between the storm this weekend and the Dec. 26, 2004 romp?

I am sure someone will post maps but I believe that storm wasn't even progged to bring much precip if I remember correctly. They had rain then flurries then 1-2 inches then 2-4 inches then 4-6 inches+ LOL Greatest surprise storm ever. I think that one was also weaker than what this weekend storm is progged to be.

Guest someguy

the NAM WRF past 60 hrs is a little silly... the 5h over central VA is 558 dm yet it has RIC warming to +5c at 850 mb ....

that bpatern does not support especiually with that massive vortex sitting over Maine/new brunswick

is this going to be warning criteria for ric?

borderline i think

I believe warning criteria for AKQ CWA is 4" or more. I guess I should know, but I can't remember what the official time frame, but I believe it maybe 24hrs. They have also issued heavy snow warnings for us, I believe February 11-12, 2006 was the last HSW issued for RIC metro. I don't know if they would ever put C VA under a blizzard warning, but I do know for the March 1993 superstorm the entire I-81 corridor.....all counties along and west of the Blue Ridge were under Blizzard warnings before the event even started.
