the best we can hope for is a strong azz upper low to plow through ric to deliver a little bit of goods, this is a rain, heavy rain to maybe tail end snow that only sticks to my snow pile event. pretty funny how early on we had a hi over NE and now that same hi is hundreds of miles off the coast blocking FTL

Speak for yourself, my longitude has me balls out all in, FTL most likely. :)

Officially 16°F at RIC this morning.....3rd straight day of low to mid teens. Although not particularly unheard of, just indicative of how decent this airmass was, particuarly the evening before last. I was, however, surprised it hit 37°F yesterday afternoon.

Meanwhile, BOS hits -2°F this morning....first subzero temperature up there since January 2004.

Not surprising....the back edge was already pushing to the eastend at the time i posted above.

Just enough to freak people out in the office...it doesn't take much. Not our pattern this year but hey, an official White Christmas two years in a row? This one being special...I can take a little bit of this cycle. Holding out hope for early Feb.

So far, the highest daily maximum temperature for this winter season (DJF) at RIC has been 67°F, which occurred on December 1, 2010. Given that the long range continues to look colder than normal, RIC may be able to continue this streak of non 70°F days. It appers that the current cold regime may persist into early February, potentially through mid month or later. So, we have a shot at finishing the 2010-11 winter season without ANY 70°F days.

Since 1897, RIC has averaged 4 days per winter with a temperature of 70°F or higher. Of the 110 winter seasons since 1897, 93 of them featured at least one day with a temperature of 70°F or higher. This corresponds to 85% of all winters having reached 70°F at least once during the season. Since 1930, only 12 winters during the DJF period failed to deliver at least one day 70°F or higher at RIC. (2009-10, 2002-2003, 1986-87,1983-84, 1977-78, 1968-69, 1963-64, 1962-63, 1957-58, 1940-41, 1939-40, 1930-31).

Most 70°F occurrences in a winter:

13 days (1975-76)

11 days (1929-30 and 1931-32)

Most Consecutive days of 70°F days in a winter:

6 days (December 3-8, 1998)

5 days (February 25-29, 1976)

Highest temperature in a winter:

83°F February 11, 1932, February 25, 1930

There have also been some topsy turvy months when extreme warmth and extreme cold took place. Taking a look at the month of January, there have been 14 Januarys since 1950 (2005, 2000, 1997, 1985, 1982, 1976, 1973, 1972, 1970,1968, 1967, 1966, 1962, 1959) that have featured at least one day with a temperature 70°F or greater and a temperature below 10°F on at least one other day during the month. In most cases, the extreme warmth preceded the cold and most often occurred during the first 10 days of the month. The temperature variability in January 1982 is most remarkable because the extremes occurred just several days apart. In January 1982, RIC reached 72°F on the 7th while a low of 4°F and a high of 16°F were observed on the 11th.

The following displays the number of winter 70°F days since 1930 when observations for record began at present site RIC Airport. It does not include temperatures from the previous city stations (1897-1929). It would be interesting to see how the rest of the winter unfold and whether or not RIC will meet this criteria.

Extended Euro has no storm right now ;x... A nice arctic cold front comes in on the 2nd now... to utter int he what looks to be a LONG cold air mass.... with the way the -NAO builds back in on this run.. it locks the freaking pv in south east Canada toward the end of the run.

Do we get a redo on December? I'm talking pattern, not one storm in particular, though I'd like another go at it.
