  1. The brine trucks were out in Columbia, SC *yesterday*.
  2. The question I'm posing is whether a mean is always an end product (like an average of 50 rainfall amounts at each geographic point) or if the means are computed internally to generate a "mean" atmosphere at each timestamp and then used to generate a single output after additional processing. I assume it's the former as the latter would seem to be problematic but I had never thought about it before.
  3. Quick question - at what stage do the ensemble means perform the averaging? Is it done at a low level, averaging pressures and temperatures and then generating output products? Or is it at the very end, averaging (for example) every output snowfall together?
  4. No kidding. The wind is really ripping right now.
  5. I don't know how much it's compacted, but woke up to 2.25" of fresh snow on the deck this morning. Not bad. Sidewalks and streets are mixed but not covered - looks like a lot of snow was wasted on the front end there. (near downtown Silver Spring)
  6. FCPS is already closed. (Edit - assuming Fairfax but maybe not what you meant)
  7. 39.4/25.0 in Silver Spring. Snowpack is still there but spotty in places where it didn't get piled up.
  8. I'm on the north side, sure, but still inside the Beltway and we're down to about 3" max after the sun did its work today. Not sure we can reach a foot of snowpack.
  9. When it rains it pours, as they say. I think it was Bob Chill in the other thread mentioning the bursty pattern of snow we sometimes fall into around here.
  10. 6" in Silver Spring. Very powdery on top to the point that sledding isn't working well in our gently sloped yard.
  11. 3/4" in Silver Spring, 30 degrees. It's a very sticky snow, adhering well to trees and vertical surfaces.
  12. It loops. Click the menu in the top left, then scroll to the bottom for "number of images." Play button is at the bottom but gets hidden on mobile view sometimes. Better on desktop view.
  13. Rain/snow mix in Silver Spring. The snow is enough to stick to our deck in a sloppy mess. 35.1/34.3, both trending steadily down.
  14. Let's see that temperature trend turn down again... (silver spring MD)
  15. 45.9 / 37.7 in Silver Spring (four corners area) Down from 62.1 / 59.7 at lunchtime.
  16. Lightly raining in Silver Spring now. 58.8/54.3. Fingers are fully crossed, but neighbors went out and bought a sled
  17. A light graupely, sleety mix in Silver Spring now.
  18. First flakes of the year near downtown Silver Spring!
  19. Nice little sleet burst in Silver Spring just now. These were solid chunks, maybe 2 or 3mm across. Not graupel or snow.
  20. Well that's not what I hoped to wake up to, but it's what I expected. Just a thin layer of sleet and ice.
  21. When did we add a para Euro? Have I been oblivious to this all winter? Assumed all para discussions were GFS....
  22. Same here. It's not like it's 31 and raining hard. It's been 27-29 and lightly raining/mixing all day and the tree branches here aren't sagging, nor is the untreated sidewalk anything but wet. Seems impossible.
  23. Also, Amazon Prime is still making deliveries here if we want to use that criteria for "serious event" If they ever stop we'll know the S is hitting the F.
