Out of the last 9 years, Roc only had 3 years without snow on the ground on Christmas Day. Not too shabby and not nearly as bad as our memory wants to think it was.... Roc had 2" on the ground in 2018 Roc had 6" on the ground in 2017 Roc had 3" on the ground in 2016 Roc had no snow on the ground in 2015 Roc had no snow on the ground in 2014 Roc had 2" on the ground 2013 Roc had 2" on the ground 2012 Roc had no snow on the ground in 2011 Roc had 4" on the ground in 2010

Yeah I noticed this IMBY too, I'm guessing skies were a little clearer and winds a little lighter. And with this fresh snowpack, radational cooling was really maximized. WAA is ongoing aloft though so I expect temps may rebound a bit overnight.

I just bought these bad boys this week! I also chose to stud them because I’ve noticed some difference on truly icy roads (and they sound and look cooler, haha). I have separate rims for each so it’s relatively easy to change between seasons. Dedicated snow tires are a game changer. The rubber is softer in cold conditions and the additional sipes really grab the snow. I also add about 500lbs of sand bags in the bed during big storms.

Thats a very encouraging look for the North country crew! Look at pathetic ROC, lmao . Very accurate for the upcoming pattern though, we don't get squat in West Wind setups.

The pattern certainly looks active on the East Coast the next few weeks. Lots of Miller A type systems lurking in the long range and they seem to want to run inland or right on the coast. One of these is going to hit sooner or later.

This is a really great suggestion. That route will take you right through the heart of some of the best events while always leaving a clear way out by continuing either North or South; and like he said, that road is highly maintained. Additionally, if you are chasing at night it is far more spectacular to be around giant illuminated parking lots where you can actually see the intensity of the snow falling. If I can get into a intense band I like to post up in a target or Wegmans parking lot and just watch it come pounding down. 3-4" an hour rates are something to behold and that road is full of large parking lots and places where you can sit and observe while also checking radar, posting on here, etc.

I've been on that same stretch of road coming back from Holiday Valley just crawling along sweating bullets in a complete whiteout. Literally white knuckled for many miles. It is not pleasant. I've also been on 219 and literally got vertigo because I couldnt tell if I was moving or the snow was moving. All I could do was stare out the front right of my truck looking for road reflectors while desperately trying to maintain an equal distance from each one. Just counting the minutes until I could get out. Chasing can go from thrilling to terrifying mighty fast when you are in intense lake bands. It's a very fine line.

I don't have a specific place to go. I usually try to get in position just outside the bands to get a feel for the roads and local area. I then proceed to punch through the band while maintaining some semblance of an escape plan if shit gets too dicey. I usually try to hit the band perpendicular to its long axis with the hope of making it out the other side. Seeing thundersnow, taking measurements, pushing out peoples cars along the way are the bonus agendas. But yeah, in the end It really just ends up driving around. Sometimes I'll pick some locations ahead of time to stop by such as small town with a restaurant to grab some food or an area on the lake front that is expected to be in the heart of the mayhem. I didnt have a great vehicle during the November 2014 storm and I knew it was out of my league, still sad I missed that one.

Well my wind storm has up and vanished like a fart in the wind. Now I set my eyes to possibly chasing lake effect South of Buffalo next week. I've got some PTO I need to use before the end of the year.....hmmmmm

Are we talking about the wind storm on Tuesday, cause that’s what I’m tracking. Haha. It’s losing a little steam but has maintained enough juice in the last two runs to still be a full on high wind warning.

Well of course not. Albany never has won and never could win. It's fun to see them on top for a few days though as its virtually unprecedented for them to ever have the lead.

I'm worried we end up with a rain snow mix and don't accumulate well at all.

I live in the oldest scariest neighborhood surrounded by giant trees that could destroy everything, but I still love that wind. It's just such a tangible and powerful phenomenon to witness, It's the best. You can't hate weather because of something like that. Sorry about your fence, maybe its just best to let the wind finish it off so you have a stronger case when you go to court.

I don't have much to track so I'll fall back to my weather mistress, WIND!! The GFS sure has been hinting at a high end Wind Event next Tuesday. The 6z run today was perfection!

I can't believe areas to my West are getting blasted with heavy snow today, I really wouldnt have expected that. What a fickle system this one was.

4 Inches in my backyard. I did not measure at intervals. Super wet heavy stuff, heart attack snow if you will. It looks very wintry so I am content.

I know but it’s a race against the forcing that is sliding east equally fast. Still hope, but I’m riding the razors edge way over here.

Yes. Just started. Nice dendrites so the column has cooled off nicely. Looks like all snow from here on out. Surface temp is 32 and just started to drop over the last 20 mins. Down from 33.4

The secondary low is officially deeper than the OG low. Now the remnant parent low will act as a bit of an inverted trough to focus precip back this way as upper level support moves through. The next 6-9 hours are when I need to cash in.

Sitting at 33 degrees here, so that stinks. Need to get under the influence of the new low to draw down some colder air.

That’s pretty impressive. We have maybe 3/4 of an inch of pure sleet here. The density is incredible. Can still see grass though, boooo
