  1. So any ideas why Buffalo is suddenly the hottest location in our area after being the coolest location (In events like this) for many decades? Did they pave a new parking lot nearby? Is there an increasing affect from urban heat islands? This whole thing is bizarre and almost suspicious. Can any buffalo observers verify that it felt historically hot?
  2. It’s quickly transitioning to an evening comet. I think today and tomorrow are the only days it can be seen both in the morning and at night (But that means it’s actually one of the harder days to find it as it’s closer to the rising and setting sun). It’ll get easier to see it as it enters darker skies in the nights ahead but it’s also fading at that time so kind of a wash maybe? I was able to see it from 410-5am on Tuesday morning. Here is my bush league pic - iPhone held over the eyepiece of a 30 dollar crappy refractive telescope.
  3. To me that outage looks like poorly maintained or damaged hardware failing under heavy load. Typically when people talk about rolling blackouts and heat related outages they are referring to demand outpacing the supply such that the local power generating facilities cannot keep up. That said, you are correct, the failure in Buffalo was heat related, just kind of indirectly IMO.
  4. Those outages are not driven by excessive electrical demand.
  5. Can you cut and paste the article for those of us that can't bypass the pay wall?
  6. This isn't Cali, from what I've read NY has quite a bit of electrical overhead to tap into if needed.
  7. 90F at 7pm here. Sitting on the patio drinking a strong margarita. Humidity still manageable with a dp of only 62. But dead calm
  8. That’s the thing about weather though, it does what it wants. Cheering or no cheering. If it’s going to be warm, I want to really experience some tropical nights up here. Me wanting it hot isn’t what’s killing people on the great plains. I’d rather find a way to enjoy it than bitch about it.
  9. 77 would be a goal of mine in parts of the house. Saw 84 on the living room thermostat as I passed through a few hours back, haha. The bedroom has a window unit and is well insulated though. We keep it like a meat locker in there.
  10. That’s pretty much it. I think the very persistent northeast wind direction and extremely dry ground has really boosted their temps. I’m guessing the max temps dial back a bit the next few days as the winds go south and the humidity piles on.
  11. I should put this in some context. The weather has been incredibly ideal the past few weeks, no doubt about that. Just perfect for outdoor activities. I just always find extreme weather to be fascinating; plus I have a really high tolerance for heat (I’m cold about 9 months a year). A few weeks of oppressive heat is unique, fun, and interesting. I would never want to experience it regularly though.
  12. Not surprising but finally official. The State fair has been canceled.
  13. The Northeast winds have really tempered Rochester's temps during this recent "heat wave". We've barely hit 90 and hit has felt very comfortable with the low DP's. Quite disappointing for a heat lover like myself. I want it to be completely oppressive. Give me 95 degrees with a dewpoint of 77 please!
  14. Dewpoints are crazy low today (49 right now)making the heat index lower than the actual air temp! Perfect day. Winds finally go south Monday and then the humidity will pour on. One more day of hot dry weather first.
  15. Nice find. The highest peaks in the Rockies definitely get snow in all 12 months of the year, but July is definitely the most rare and hardest one to hit.
  16. Getting storms on the lake plain with a North wind is a real hard sell this time of year. Such a tease too as I can see the anvils from my backyard on some of them.
  17. Maine is getting rocked by some beauties today. Unusual trajectory too.
  18. ive been eyeing them too but don't think they stand a chance. Pretty interesting and well defined lake breeze convergence zone. I've never fully understood why they show up on radar on a day like this? Is it just an air density difference causing an impedance mismatch and thus reflection in the beam?
  19. As for the masks, there are several issues at play. When the disease was first emerging, they didn't want to encourage mask wearing as a way to prevent catching it as it simply isnt effective that way. Now that the disease is entrenched and everywhere, along with asymptomatic spreading (which is a super complicated topic and hard to study) they just want everyone to wear masks as a way to reduces the amount of particles spraying out of all our mouths. Masks are just about mass containment of airborne particulates and obviously effective from a standpoint of preventing shit from flying out of our mouths and lungs. The situation has changed since the early days, masks are now a great tool in mitigating spread, they do not do a whole lot for the wearer for themselves, that's why its team effort. I wear a mask for everyone else. Everyone else wears a mask for me. Make sense?
  20. I look at this as a subtle nuance and not a contradiction. Alcohol is bad for the body, there are no two ways about it. But in very select circumstances, alcohol probably has affects on other underlying conditions, like in this case, dementia. That doesnt mean that alcohol is good for you, or even recommended, they just happen to find a unique set of circumstances where it might mitigate the severity of another ailment. Medicine isnt black and white, it is very complex to understand how it is all connected. I think it is still very accurate to say that alcohol is not good for the body in any amount. I wouldn't recommend drinking because it may help prevent another disease 30 years from now. The collateral damage from drinking might cause another condition or outweigh any other potential value. This type of article should be a starting point for further studies on why alcohol might temper the effects of dementia which would lead scientists to a better cure or medicine (not alcohol) for preventatively treating dementia. It should not encourage people to drink in hopes that it prevents this horrible disease that you may or may not get years later. It's all about context.
  21. I trust the thousands of scientists studying this virus, of which zero have made any mention of the virus weakening. That first study is nearly a month old and had no backing from any other major medical doctors. This is simply a matter of people in Europe following instructions while Americans go out of their way to flout said instructions and are almost purposely trying to disobey all guidance.
  22. The virus certainly isnt weakening. We are just seeing the true American selfishness and ignorance on full display. We always knew it existed, but this virus has really made it shine. Americans refuse to give up any of their personal freedoms for the greater good of the country. You reap what you sow.
  23. He's just a stupid troll, and a bad one at that. Imagine trolling a weather board (that's about as lame as it gets to start with), and the best you can do is point out dates on a calendar to when fall will start as if this is some kind of punishing or groundbreaking information.
  24. I picked up a miracle half inch of rain with a narrow line of potent storms right around 330 this morning. I’ll take it!! Now we start the 7 day dry stretch. side note - the storm had some great thunder and lightning. Was a quintessential short but intense summer nighttime thunderstorm.
  25. Very sad we missed out on that rain. Almost a full 7-8 days until the next widespread rain chance. Get those sprinklers fired up. It’s going to be an arid brown wasteland come Fourth of July. Aside from that, highs and lows this week look absolutely marvelous. 80s and 60s respectively.
