Upstate/Eastern New York

All these horrible outlooks are validating my choice for chasing yesterday. There is no way I’ll see anything in my backyard that even comes close to what I experienced yesterday. I at least kind of got my fix. -

Yeah, the rates at the end were pretty intense! I love chasing heavy snow in Urban environments. Way more interesting than driving around in the country. The program is called Filmora. I highly recommend it. Very easy to use once you get the hang of it. -

On one hand, this is a somewhat crappy and fairy uneventful video. On the other hand, when I left today I only planned to drive to Batavia and be back home in about an hour or 2 so I had no intention of shooting images for a video, lol. I really wish I had brought the GoPro or made an effort to get some better shots. Anyway, it still gives you a decent idea of the journey. Enjoy.. Side Note - The images in the video never do it a justice. The visibility was literally about twice as bad as the video lets on. I think the camera filters out the snow thinking its noise. -

Snow blowing is amazing, especially for us snow addicts. Such fun machines. -

Thanks!! It really exceeded my expectations. And as I said before, a daylight chase is so much more enjoyable. I’ve chased at night enough, it’s disorienting and stressful under those intense rates. I actually got some decent video too! I’d have to put it on YouTube though. -

Well I’m back home after 168 miles and 8 hours of chasing. That was an all timer for me too. My soul feels rejuvenated! Definitely got into some insane rates at times, had to be over 3-4”/hr stuff. . Pushed out 6 cars and jumped one. What a day what a day. -

Snowfall rates have to be up in the 3-5”/hr range. Cars are getting stuck in the middle of the road at stop lights. Feels like I’m being buried alive. It’s glorious! -

Looks like that extra synoptic moisture is really giving it a boost. I’m down by the peace bridge. Very wild conditions with really strong winds. A lot of graupel in the band the closer you get to the lake. -

Current position. Getting really stormy on the edge of this band. Wind is picking up nicely. I think I’ll drive up and get in that band then sink south with it and eventually blast home. It’s so hard to leave this and end up at home with an inch -

Sitting at the eastern hills mall and the sky to the NW is extremely dark. Looks like the band is strengthening after realigning. The impending shift south is quite apparent on the st Catherine’s radar. Pushed out 3 cars so far along transit! -

I didn’t try much because the videos always look much less an intense than the real thing. Plus it’s hard to shoot and drive. I should have brought the go pro. I did get one but I’d have to upload to YouTube first I think. I don’t think this page accepts iPhone movies. -

Looks like things are petering out but I more than got my fill. Smashed right through the heart of those solid yellows for the last hour (pembroke through Akron and then Clarence). All the backroads had a good 8-12 inches on them, perfect for romping in the 4x4!! Now I’m Sitting at a rite aid on Transit. Probably will just make my way home as I think the show is winding down. Chasing in broad daylight is a million times nicer than at night. -

I just got off the thruway in Batavia. Is the band whip lashing north only to move south? Winds over the Niagara peninsula look like they are shifting. Not sure if I should get back on and then get off at pembroke. Or head southwest towards Wyoming county and wait it out? Thoughts? It’s cranking pretty good in Batavia for the record. -

That piece of wood is usually like a snowshoe and reluctant to sink in (unless yours is really heavy or thick wood). I suppose super fluff ratios might pose a problem. You could shovel in and pack a little surrounding snow. It doesn’t have to be perfectly level but it’s good to get it up a bit and try to keep it at height. I’ve worked through this same issue over the years. It’s up to you, just wouldn’t want to see a historic number tainted someday. You’re doing a great job though. Very few people are measuring at all in the intervals you are! Keep it up. -

Hey Buffalo weather, saw your snowfall pics!! Looking amazing! @BuffaloWeather One word of advice for future storms. When you clear the snowboard, put the cleared snow underneath the snowboard and continue to raise the level of the snowboard so it’s at the same level as the surrounding snow. If your board stays in a depression like that it will start to skew the numbers from drifting. -

Bare green grass here. Nary a flake to be had. Boooo.... however if you look super close there are couple ice crystals in a tiny pile from the snow last week -

It won’t budge until that surface low is up and parallel with us. Then it will just roar east and northeast. But the moisture is pretty sparse by then. It’s all timing so we at least have a shot still (of having a coating that is) -
