  1. Raining here, had a thunderclap or two to go with it, backing in from the ENE.... NWS Blacksburg has already issued river flood warnings for rivers around and southeast of Roanoke for Thursday and Friday from Debby.
  2. Second round of thundershowers just moved through. About .3 in gauge. Thin lines, downpours for 3-5 minutes and done.
  3. My numbers for the month of July 2024. Averaged high temp was 85.9 degrees vs a normal of 83.9 degrees, a +2.0 above average. The warmest day was the 17th with a 95.2 degree reading. Averaged low temp was 63.2 degrees vs a normal of 62.8 degrees, a +0.4 degrees above average. The coolest temp for the month was 51.3 degrees on the 2nd. Overall averaged temp was 74.6 degrees vs a normal of 73.4 degrees, a +1.2 degrees above average. Rainfall for the month was 6.42 inches vs a normal of 4.01 inches, a +2.41 inches above average and the 2nd wettest July on record beating 1980's and 2015's 6.29 inches, but falling short of 2013's 7.56 inches. Highest daily rainfall was 2.32 inches on the 27th. There were 17 days with measurable, 0 days with a 'T' and 14 dry days. Highest wind recorded was 31 mph on the 31st. Only 5 days had winds in excess of 25 mph. One new record for the month, the 2.32 inches on the 27th set a new daily rainfall. A strange month, went into July very dry and stayed that way until mid-month, then the gates opened, and we had measurable on every day except one though the end of month, several days with 1+ inches. Started cool, then got excessively hot for 3-4 days mid-month, then back to average to slightly below to finish. Records date back to October 1979.

  5. LOL, I'm HOPING this is an issue with their system, take a look at the heat index of 264/264!! CabinMtn2-CVNWR/Dolly Sods
  6. 86.3/70.0, that's only a heat index of 91, but boy is it MISERABLE out there now.
  7. Nice boomer just rolled thru here. About .3 in gauge and a 31 mph gust. 70.7/69.8
  8. Nothing ATM, looks like 0.10-.015 in the gauge from earlier today. May hit 8 inches for the month with one more shower before Wednesday. Amazing considering was at 0.47 on the 13th.
  9. Shattered the daily rainfall record, 2.32 inches fell in about 2 hours last night as storm basically parked overtop us! Old mark was 1.31 inches in 2022. Almost 6 inches now for month, after being bone dry in the middle. Any ditches or small tributaries that had anything left in them after the 24's gullywasher should be sparkling clean now. Currently dense fog and 62.4/61.6.
  10. And it picked back up. Going with 0.90 (best I can get reading from the window with flashlight) in 18 minutes! Still raining moderately ATM.
  11. Question- wouldn't Sheldon and Amy been a better pick with all the flags for the opening ceremony??
  12. LOL, it has eased off, looks like .40 in about 7 or 8 minutes.
  13. I will say the opening ceremony for the Olympics was interesting....
  14. Well, I'll get to add to that number, pouring at the moment.
  15. Where would 5.53" fall (mine)?
  16. I went ahead and placed this in the gardening topic since it has headed that way. My (our) main problem growing ANY root plant is the slate and clay soil here. You only have to dig 3-10" in most of the yard to hit slate. So 95% of the garden is in raised beds or planting bags/buckets. Another reason why I struggle with grass, just not enough topsoil to make it thru dry spells. I have added 2-4 inches of dirt and compost over the years to most of the yard, (so, yes there were spots that the slate was practically on top the ground years ago) and I did managed to keep grass in 75-80% of the yard thru this dry stretch. Planted 3 lbs of seed and got 16 pounds of taters out of 7 bags, not great, not terrible. On a side note, this will be the best year ever for carrots!
  17. So, wife and I dug up/dumped the 'taters a while ago, they had laid over and died off about two weeks ago. We were concerned with all the rain (close to 2" in last 4 days) that they may start to rot due to the wet ground/dirt inside the bags. NOPE. Top 1 1/2 to 2 inches were wet, dry as a bone rest of the way thru the bags (20 gal) to the bottom. So just HOW dry was it before the previous 4 days?
  18. 1.28 for past 24 hours, most since 5/18 when 1.30 fell. Takes me to 3.68 for the month. Joined the 'haves' for the battle between have/have not for rain this summer. I'll do what I can to divert the rest of the month to other areas, especially thru Shenandoah Valley area! Oh, never mind, it just started raining again....
  19. A bit south, but still in VA- Tornado Warning VAC083-240000- /O.NEW.KRNK.TO.W.0014.240723T2332Z-240724T0000Z/ BULLETIN - EAS ACTIVATION REQUESTED Tornado Warning National Weather Service BLACKSBURG VA 732 PM EDT Tue Jul 23 2024 The National Weather Service in BLACKSBURG has issued a * Tornado Warning for... 20. Moving this here, didn't realize I'd posted in the drought topic. Posted 55 minutes ago Gullywasher!! 1.01 in last 35 minutes. About 1.20 on day now, still raining, but heaviest looks to have moved east.
  21. Sledgehammers work better, just saying.... And thanks for 'sticking' Styx into my head!
  22. Had another thundershower about 2 hours ago, around .2 in gauge and it is thundering again. After going 10 days with practically nothing, last 7 have given 1.79" plus whatever ends up being today's total for day 8.
  23. 0.63 here at 7 am gauge dump, 0.38 previous, so an inch in two, I'll take.
  24. More rain. Right at .6" on the day and rain still falling.
