This made me look it up and this morning was the coldest air temp for Madison since Feb 1996

taking an early look at records for MSN, some of the more attainable ones are:

1/30 Record Low Max -1F

1/31 Record Low -22 F  

1/31 Record Low Max -6F

2/1 Record Low Max -1 F

If some of the models pan out then record lows of -26F and -28F on the 29th and 1st seem reachable

105 straight hours below zero in Madison on the 0z GFS.

Finished with 6.9" at MSN, 6.3" at a family member NW of town and ~7" near downtown Madison

Verbatim the Euro has Fort Dodge Iowa at -44 on Thursday morning.   Which is only 3 degrees away from the all time record low temp for the state of Iowa

Don't forget the engine tomorrow, which is the arctic front.  looks to bring a DAB-.5" to areas east of the Mississippi

Freezing drizzle started in Madison at 8:30

wow the 3km NAM came in JUICED.  Don't think we'll be getting 17 inches but have a feeling we will be well into warning criteria snow totals.  

Woah, 18z gfs decides to give 8-12 inches to a large part of S Wisconsin.  Bumped QPF amounts from around .6" to .8"

got down to -14 last night at Madison.  Definitely tanked with calm winds for most of the night

Down to -3 in Madison already at 7 PM.  Have a feeling we can blow past the forecast low of -7 especially if winds can stay calm

got about 5.5"-6" in downtown Madison.  A family member northwest of town got 6.2"

Live near downtown but work on the SW side.  

Its been snowing on the SW side of Madison for about 45 mins now.  Small flakes but accumulating on both grass and untreated roads.

Yep, updated totals up to 5" to 7".  still think we may get the higher end of that.  Still some dry air at lower levels to overcome, dewpoint of 7 in Madison.  Dewpoint of 5 in Prairie Du Chien with heavy virga overhead

GFS has had the low running from Kansas City to just north of Chicago for the past couple runs.  ECMWF has a similar idea.  Both bring a big hit to southern Wisconsin.  Unfortunately looks like rain for areas further south.

Might be hauling in a MSN jackpot on the frontogenesis band.  GFS/FV3/NAM/HRRR all showing between 7 and 9 inches here.
