  1. KBED reporting 35. The local school says 37 but snowing lightly in the 01742.
  2. all the doom/gloom on the other threads made me look at the saddleback and SLoaf webcams snow top and bottom at bottom places...
  3. 2nd day at BEast on my IndyPass. Sun was partially out in the morning - mid-40s when I left at 1:30pm. They had made snow the last couple of nights trying to recover. Folks said the crowds were the smallest of the season. I really like that mountain and I've never really been there when you could ski in the woods!
  4. Anyone following the last man standing event at ski the whites, once again crazy
  5. Kind of shocked to see that much snow in your pictures honestly.
  6. Went pond skating, the thickness is fine but the surface got too soft in the sun during the hour I was there... fear that may be it, the sum total of my outdoor skating this winter - 1 hour!
  7. Got a new pair of skates XMAS '80 and walked up to the local pond just south of Boston to try them out that afternoon - didn't last long. Plan to lace the same pair up later this PM at one of the local ponds in metrowest that looked safe this AM on inspection when things warm up a bit!
  8. top of saddleback now at -35. https://www.weatherlink.com/embeddablePage/show/9a49cc37130f4a1cbf0064d9a3933113/summary
  9. woke up at 230 and checked the local school weather station, 30, took the dog out for his walk a bit before 7, 21, currently 18 in concord ma
  10. go snowshoeing or xc skiing and stick to the woods - that's my plan on Saturday. You will expend so much energy, you won't get cold. Dress in layers so you can shed but wear an outer layer that blocks the wind.
  11. I had planned to head up and take a few runs on the sherburne this am and then ski at Black in PM but just didn't have the energy this morning. Just looked at the webcam at Wildcat - heavy snow - regretting my decision! Snowing hard at SLoaf too.
  12. skied Berkshire East yesterday, beautiful day. Short lines but the main chair was always full. Skied the single lines so never waited more than 3-4 minutes between runs and skied top to bottom so got a lot of vertical. Conditions were really good - not enough snow to have woods open. The warmth - around 40 - and sun softened things up. I like this place the more I go...a once a year person.
  13. was talking to a friend about the conditions at SLoaf and he was saying how he's been very satisfied with his ski season so far...temperatures have been warm with not a lot of wind. It reminded me of the '83-84 season - does anyone have the summary stats for Farmington or even the County for that year...would be interesting to see if it was warm but on the snowier side compared to the rest of NE that year.
  14. This morning around 6:30ish the temperature readings on mt. washington were all below freezing (in some cases barely) with exception of 4K which was at 39 degrees. Interestingly, Jackson ski touring ctr said 4" fell with a light mist after snow. I looked at the Wildcat site right after they posted their #s and the narrative where they also stated 14" was time marked today - threw me for a loop. Cannon only reported 2-4" while Waterville was reporting 6".
  15. Great day at Waterville Valley. They were making snow primarily over on the new mountain and pushing out big piles on the main hill. They haven't opened nor made snow on their steeper stuff yet - true grit Bobby's run. With that said the foot of snow really helped, was even was able to ski some natural trails on upper half of mountain. Better day than I expected - obviously ski on all day. New 6 person lift is nice. I like the tbar at the summit too.
  16. I was driving up rt. 3 in Merrimack this morning and called my brother-in-law who lives there but is down in Florida and said if they get snow, sleet, freezing rain and then rain watch out... All the white pines are already caked in snow and leaning and tilting with lots of limbs down.
  17. skinned up WaWa a couple of times this AM. Their policy is off the hill when they start loading the lifts which on weekends is 7:30, between feeding and walking the dog and drive time, that makes for an early morning! Anyway, it was great to have snow on the trees and the natural snow mixed with the man-made base was nice. I pulled out of the parking lot at 7:34 and the cars were backed up from about a quarter mile on rt. 140 ... or a mile plus trying to get into the main parking lot!
  18. @powderfreakwould have to confirm but I think he always references 40" at the mansfield snowstake as his good-to-go indicator for skiing in the woods. IMO just not worth skiing in marginal conditions in the woods where you risk tearing up a knee or worse. and the mansfield stake was at 23" yesterday. As observed, western Maine seems to have been able to retain and add to their snow depths this season relative to the rest of New England
  19. Saddleback is reporting 100% open! Assume this is the first NE area to do so this season. And, SLoaf has opened Brackett Basin which is kind of crazy. Folks on social media say that they are done a lot of work which I interpret as cleaning out a lot of the undergrowth.
  20. About 8 years ago, my son and I had a Telluride-Taos vacation planned and it stopped snowing in Taos so we audibled and spent 2 days at Wolf Creek instead. The vertical is only 1.500' but runs along a ridge for a mile plus and you can ski everything. They consistently get the most snow in CO. There is no resort just the ski area. Lot's of Texans and folks from Arkansas which is hilarious. Only been to Taos once and the terrain is awesome.
  21. Wolf Creek is awesome btw: Also, been watching Taos webcams - doing a lot of skiing vicariously this season so far! pounding snow there right now. They have a 40-50+ base right now too.
  22. views from top of Cranmore are really good - last January.
  23. tickets averaged out to $60/day when purchased in 5, 6, 7 day increments. It was XMAS so bed rates were probably almost 2X standard rates. We had dinner at a very nice hotel in downtown Lech and I think the xmas rate was 1,800 euro per night. It's now 1,100 euro or less for remainder of season. The place we stayed is now about $200 per night - nothing fancy but clean and nice and a 10 minute walk into downtown. Equivalent food was probably about the same - note: I eat pizza, BBQ and Mexican when out west! so our dinners were definitely more upscale) but there was no cafeteria options for lunch that I saw, it was a waiter in lederhosen (or the St. Pauli girl) taking your order. It was all very nice. Definitely a different kind of ski experience - and very enjoyable even with sub-par snow - than I've done in NE, CO, NM, UT, WY, MT, ID, BC for sure. Lech is part of Arlberg/St. Anton and definitely caters to an upscale clientele - we spoke to some Americans who stayed in St. Christoph - a smaller village - for what they implied was less $$ but they ate all their meals at their hotel and they said it was great but their options in the town were very limited to non-existent.
  24. I'm frugal, I consume PBJs, bags of nuts and/or carrots and a nalgene's bottle worth of water brought from home whenever I ski...have to admit though, it was kind of fun sitting down with a menu and waiter everyday in Austria at XMAS.
