  1. That is horrible to watch - there has been at least one instance in the last 10years of the body of the skier/boarder emerging 4-5weeks later after falling into a crevasse. Wrapped it up yesterday with a 1/2 day plus at SLoaf. Started the morning skinning up to the summit where I met another skinner who had been working their way across NNE - Stowe Thursday, Wildcat Friday and SLoaf Saturday - said SLoaf by far had most snow. Talking to ski patrol on skin up, they estimated they had lost at least 2 feet on a man-made trail we were on over last two days. The pond skin - something I don't pay attention too but had a friend participating yesterday- was oversubscribed - they added 100 spots - was a party, had a huge crowd and looked like everyone was having a great time! As @NW_of_GYXsaid, everything was still open - btw, where is that picture you posted taken? - after my skin up in the AM and skiing bumps for two continuous days - may legs were shot and I avoided the steep bumpy stuff yesterday but the front side snowfields were still great. Weird winter - 15 days of lifted served NE skiing with everyday being really good - least good condition wise was probably last weekend at Cannon with the summit never unlocking. 6 days in Arlberg (Lech/St. Anton) at Xmas with subprime conditions was nevertheless a wonderful experience, and a dozen plus mornings at WaWa skinning. what for me was so disappointing was my lack of nordic skiing - normally 40+ days - I probably got a dozen. It was so bad that when I finally did purchase my Weston ski track pass, the conditions were terrible, it was frankly so depressing I bagged on it after a few weeks! Sadly, only one day at Great Brook which mustered less than a full week being open. I'm bringing my skis to the tuner this week just so I am not enticed to get 'get one more day' time to move on!
  2. Been at SLoaf last two days - the pack is taking a big hit but still skiing everything on the mountain - including front and back side snowfields - I've been starting each morning at 830 and skiing non-stop to a 2pm - pretty crushed by then - lots of great bumps on Bubblecuffer and Winters Way. Ice still in Chain of Lakes - drove up this PM.
  3. any chance of onshore wind? - among other problems in '86, I turned the corner at Cleveland Circle to go down Beacon Street and was met with a very cool 40's onshore wind and found myself in an ambulance shivering before I got to Coolidge Corner - it had been very comfortable weather and easy pace for the first 21-22 miles! An intended 2:55 'training run' turned into me lying down on the floor of the green line b/c I felt so horrible! Gosh that was a long time ago! For any runners on the board - I'm laughing at my now broken down self - I wish I could run a single 6:45 mile today!
  4. skied at Cannon yesterday (Sunday). Top half of mountain never soften - between cool temps and low dews didn't have a chance. headed to SLoaf at end of week - hoping it doesn't get too warm.
  5. they have plenty of snow. I skinned up this AM and it is deep with plenty of ice!
  6. skied at Jay Tuesday, Bolton yesterday - as I posted in another thread skiing was fine on Tuesday and yesterday was a spectacular day at Bolton. Skiing with my 12 year old nephew, up from MD and after looking at @powderfreak comment about the conditions at the picnic tables this AM and ski reports from MRG have decided to forego skiing today - a rarity for me but not sure of how enjoyable the conditions or temperatures and wind will be for me or my friend!
  7. Skied yesterday at Jay and didn't think it was that bad a day - there was still powder and loose snow in the woods or anything that hadn't been fried on Monday. Skied today at Bolton - will echo the "what a day" sentiment. Waiting to see what today brings and the weather tomorrow - concerned about wind holds mostly.
  8. Right now is when Wildcat shines. They just announced they were adding a 'bonus' weekend - patriot's day weekend and they aren't even staying open on the Monday! - which kind of drives me nuts...loved how Wildcat use to push it to the very end.
  9. left the house at 4am, skied until almost to 4 and got home around 830. Great day at the Loaf with a dear friend who I've known for almost 50 years and with whom we both skied at SLoaf for the first time 41 years ago while freshman in college. Pack is deep, the conditions were quite good, some early wind holds left only King Pine open early in the day but the SuperQuad and Skyline lifts both came on line before 11. Another great day in western Maine.
  10. I nordic skied in the morning at Jackson Ski Touring Ctr using my Indy Pass. I drove up Carter Notch Road and skied in their Prospect Farm area - the highest elevation terrain. A ton of snow and the conditions were great although things were softening when I finished just before noon. I then drove over to Black Mtn thinking I'd use my IndyPass there too. Wrong, only one redemption per day allowed! I was booted up and standing at the ticket window when this came to my attention... I sucked it up and bought a half day ticket. Only the mid mountain lift was open - not sure why the summit lift wasn't - anyway, the snow was sticky and the available terrain was tame. Anything that was in the sun and hadn't gotten snowmaking was almost bare and closed. Just a spectacular day weather wise...
  11. Their website said they were limiting ticket sales anyway to try to limit lift line queues to 20 minutes. Was thinking of getting there on Friday but think there is going to be too much non-frozen precipitation.
  12. Two photos this morning at WaWa - posted earlier there was about 16" on the summit. Snow was super dense and actually not particularly fun to ski...the 93 under foot wasn't the right tool! Beautiful on the mountain though.
  13. just back from skinning at WaWa - easy 16" on summit around 7:30 - Rain/Snow line is the prison rotary in Concord.
  14. just arrived home from Cannon - spectacular day skiing - sun and just the right temperature. No complaints. Just looking at forecast and was hoping they would pick up 12"+ from this next storm but doesn't look like it.
  15. went over and skied at Crotched last night for 3 hours - ski on the entire time but more folks (kids) there after dinner time. conditions were quite good and they have a nice base of snow. Flurries most of the time we skied which provided a nice vibe. such a good utilitarian ski hill. Whenever I go, it takes me back to teaching and skiing with my kids when they were young.
  16. Been to Telluride once, great place to ski. Stayed in town near the gondola and it was very nice. A friend sent this to me later
  17. Great day at Saddleback - guessing 12+" - just fantastic skiing everywhere but especially in the woods with nothing lurking underneath. Some wind holds in the AM but was able to avoid. Back tomorrow.
  18. This morning was my first cross country ski in my domicile - concord ma - this season. Amazingly, the 1-2" of snow that fell overnight that covered the locked up 2-3" of sleet, snow and freezing rain that had fallen last week provided a perfect surface In a normal winter, this is something I would have done at least a dozen or two times at this point in the season. Walden Pond looks to be pretty much covered in a very thin layer of ice - perhaps the first time this season! All very crazy. Regardless, it was great.
  19. day 2 of my 2 Indy days at Waterville Valley. What a great day. High winds delayed the summit lift - but I was probably the first person top via the old sunnyside lift - and the wind blew all day but the entire mountain is now open with exception of the woods - although some terrain in there was open and being skied. The lift on the new POD of trails never ran due to high winds and it looks pretty susceptible to wind closures. Groomers left a good deal of the terrain ungroomed so basically skied wind pack, small powder bumps all day. There is a good amount boilerplate under the new snow but with moderate traffic, it wasn't an issue except around the lift off-ramps. 5 hours skiing straight top to bottom ski runs - need to get those legs in shape for spring bumps!
  20. just back from shoveling 2" of heavy, compacted sleet snow. 32 at both the local school and KBED. Temperature stood steady all night. Light snow currently in 01742.
  21. Good choice. Great mountain especially when they have natural snow and although I haven't been there in years, Killington sucks everyone away and I can't think of when I've really had to wait in line there.
  22. KBED reporting 35. The local school says 37 but snowing lightly in the 01742.
  23. all the doom/gloom on the other threads made me look at the saddleback and SLoaf webcams snow top and bottom at bottom places...
  24. 2nd day at BEast on my IndyPass. Sun was partially out in the morning - mid-40s when I left at 1:30pm. They had made snow the last couple of nights trying to recover. Folks said the crowds were the smallest of the season. I really like that mountain and I've never really been there when you could ski in the woods!
  25. Anyone following the last man standing event at ski the whites, once again crazy
