  1. Temperature down to 47 degrees here. Meanwhile in Manhattan (the heat island) the temperature at 7PM was 59 at 8PM 56 and at 9PM it is back up to 58. On nights with very little wind, the range in temperatures can be extreme. My area is reporting temperatures now that range from the mid 40s to low 50s. I have two weather stations in my yard and both normally report very similar temperatures but on nights like this they can be quite different. One is about 5-6 ft. above the ground, as the weather bureau wants, and it says 47.1 and the other which is some 17 ft. above the ground is reporting a temperature of 49.9.
  2. I got down to 46 about 1A.M. and then the temperature leveled off and actually rose a few degrees by daylight.
  3. That wouldn't be the worse thing to happen. A cold fall can make for a long winter. Also warmer than normal temps this time of year and into October can be pleasant rather than hot.
  4. This mornings low here was 48, I'm already down to 49 tonight.
  5. Looks like some large surf and beach erosion the next few days. Possibly as bad as last week when Jones Beach had complete over wash. Meanwhile dropping to the mid 50s here. As spring is just a few days away in the southern Hemisphere, Amundsen-Scott weather station at the South Pole has a temperature of -70 degrees with a windchill of -103.
  6. The last warm spell called for 90 a week out but it never materialized. The later it gets the harder to get to those type of temperatures. I will go with 80-85 and be happy with that.
  7. Never got higher than the low 60s today. Impressive cool spell for this time of year. Most areas in central and upstate NY had their growing season end last night with temperatures below freezing.
  8. Temperatures will be dropping into the 20s in many parts of the Catskills and Adirondacks this weekend. Colors will probably be near peak before long in those areas.
  9. Considering how liberal we have become in naming storms, I think this will be happening far more in the future. It is fine that we name more storms but it makes for bad comparisons when looking back.
  10. It has been active, no doubt, but I bet a decent amount of these storms never would have been named in the past, especially Alpha.
  11. Ok, so here is one reason why we are now into the Greek alphabet with tropical systems. Sub tropical storm Alpha is going into Portugal.
  12. I am thinking it might act like a thin cloud layer
  13. I wonder if the smokey sky will keep night time temps a few degrees higher and put a cap on day temps.
  14. Went down to Jones Beach this evening. Swells very high but really could not get near the ocean. The entire beach had over wash, right up to the boardwalk.
  15. I could actually look at the sun just before sunset. The smoke made it as if you were looking thru filtered eclipse glasses.
  16. Bermuda taking it on the chin, just got thru Paulette. Looks like Sally will hit a little further east, maybe around Mobile.
  17. Would not be surprised to see some 30s in our colder suburbs before this week is over.
  18. Sally seems to want to follow a similar path as Laura after it makes landfall. I barely got a shower out of Laura.
  19. As many named storms as we have had this season, so far, it really has not been as bad as it could have been. Many of the storms were weak and fortunately we have had only a few hurricanes and one major. It is now mid September and in a few weeks we will be past peak, very active right now and even though the waters are warm, wind shear has been helping to keep many of the storms this season at bay. Of course things can change fast.
  20. So much more comfortable this morning. Looks like the chilliest air of the season over the next week.
  21. Yeah I think a few miles can make a big difference when it's raining that hard, I also have some doubts about some of these very high totals
