Agree. I lived in Ct. and then moved to Long Island. The area of Long Island I am in has no hills. Just get in the car and drive in the snow. In Ct.you have to consider where you have to go and how to get there the best way. The hills are bad in the snow.

Not much of anything falling here with light dusting on the ground. Temperature starting to rise as 31.4

Another extremely cold period was 1977. I remember standing on the Ct. shore and looking out on Long Island Sound and seeing ice as far out as my eyes could see. 1934 had that one extremely cold month (February) with those record low temperatures. 1977 had an extremely cold January and that was preceded by a cold December.

Yea it looks like late next week and it appears it will be one of those cold snaps where the cold comes from the north right down the Hudson Valley rather than from the Midwest. This is usually our coldest temperatures. We'll see if it actually materializes.

This cold spell really emphasized the difference between urban and rural areas with such good radiational cooling.

Got down to 9 here. Would have been lower but high clouds prevented it.

8 here for a low. Numerous stations in the Catskills around -20

I know someone in the Panhandle. They had 5 inches and counting. Might hit 5 and 1/2 or 6, ending soon. All streets closed, no plows.

Already down to -13 degrees near Andes NY in the Catskills
-
The Panhandle expecting up to 5 inches

Would not be surprised if the Hudson River from around Newburgh north will have ice breakers to make a path for the ships to go from Albany to NYC and back

9 degrees here this morning
