1259 Aug 19. I just got a NWS weather alert Tor Warning for my area in Rowley.
We have torrential rain, have had it nearly constantly for some time but totally vertical, no winds to speak of.
My phone must think I'm somewhere that I'm not.

Short video of the Somers tornado by a resident of route 83. Videographer was not certain of what he was looking at.

I don't know what age is actually a good age to pass away (especially as I get older) but 31 is way too young.
Deep condolences to his parents & family.

The lightning strikes are incredible. Like non stop and all around. It was continuous thunder on its way down here from the NW and when it hit (like right up the road maybe 1/8 th mile) it was multiple strikes all around. Passing through to the SE now.
The rain has been a constant strong gray curtain as I look out. No gauge as I live under trees...good for shade until something brings them down. Not good for measurements or gardening. lessening in intensity now as storm quickly rolls away to the SE.

Power lost for 2-3 minutes The grid might be stronger out here (?) than it was when I lived in North Andover MA where the power would go for a day during every other summer thunderstorm. Wind is still blowing, but it has never gotten as strong as April storms were. Intermitent rain drops that have you wondering whether it was rain or bird spit.

BTW i made the mistake of not wearing sun screen a little over a week ago. Thursday 7/9/20. It was about 90 that day. And i got the worse sunburn of my life.
That is too painful to even look at. Yikes.

Sitting outside with a hot cup of coffee, directly in the sun. Summer at its finest
Are you at least wearing a hat?
There might be some brain damage eventually...someone has to have done a study or 2 on that...

It is crazy to think about how with no internet, TV, and other means of communication.... you had to "see to believe". People starting a rumor about 112 degrees and then folks just starting a migration to see if it's true.
Such a different world. Like when entire towns would gather around a housefire because well, it was going to be the most interesting thing you'd see if a long time and if you were curious what a housefire looked like, that was how you saw it. No google image search, lol.
I dunno about that...ever been stuck in a gapers delay when people in your 3Nbo lanes are backed up 5 miles to rubber neck an accident in the slowest Sbo lane. Longer delay if the accident is in the median.

(1911, July) A really strange month.
An interesting write up from the couple writing the New England Historical Society blog.
It reminds me of 10 days in July 1995 when I was in grad school in Chicago. The street surfaces stuck to the car tires...a shlup kind of sound as you drove in the neighborhoods I have never been in as hot or as cold as I was in that decade of Summers and Winters.

The 1911 Heat Wave Was So Deadly It Drove People Insane
A July 1911 heat wave killed thousands of New Englanders and sent many over the brink of madness.

Short Term...Saturday is going to be a chilly day. Just how chilly you ask? Well, not record setting but it could be the 3rd of 4th coolest June 13th on record. A strong upper level trough will situate over the North Country on Saturday... Highs will struggle to climb into the mid 50s to near 60 degrees with summits seeing highs in the low to upper 30s. If you do plan to hike, make sure to have a warm layer as many people don`t expect temperatures in the 30s at summit level in June.
Thought about hiking then decided I didn't want to drive much. With minimal winds, I'll be just fine staying East.

1.5'" in the early stages of crusty.
Somethings still falling but too light to ID as snow flakes. Wimpy sleet.
-
5.5 here.
Light powder, taking a walk with a shovel shoveling.

Sunny, 65F, mildly windy, warm winds, earlier. Raked up the leaves I didn't get to in October when it was colder.
Stronger, colder gusts started abt 5 mins ago. Judging from the waving trees, looks like the direction changed.

2 inches.
Plow just went by. Is there a bonus if they use up the snow funds before Xmas?

About 40 min ago, leaving Boston on 93 N hit deluge that even the fastest wipers couldn't keep up, with hail mixed into the rain. Mostly rain but there were enough smacks to get your attention thru the Fellsway and North area. Leftmost passing lane was mostly flooded for the length up until Stoneham.
-
A deluge is moving thru now. The skies just opened up. Just rain.
-
Meanwhile, north coastal MA is 55 degrees with fog which rolled in about 45 min ago. Evidence of a good amount of rain at some point as some low points in the roads are flooded.

That’s a familiar looking location...cousins live in Rowley and I bet you’re neighbors.
It is a very distinctive cross street without the charm of the old colonial architecture in the tourist part of town.

They're all short without their stilleto heels. Manolo Blahnik doesn't do functional snow boots.
Off to get my functional boots, gloves and shovel for round 3 of shoveling another 7-8 inches.

And you assume he should have come right on the board and posted? Get serious.
ZONKS! There are priorities in life!
(tongue in cheek)
It's good to hear from him. I know I have been pinging my friends in other parts of MO, OH, IL, IN and even in PA which had some earlier warnings today.
The more I read and see about the damage in Joplin, the more haunted I am. I do not understand why.

I was not picturing the fast development of this tornado until I saw this video these chasers shot of the funnel dropping then developing into a monster so very quickly.

Part of the driveway is still blown clear to pavement, the rest is buried to undiscernable levels. Living at the base of a T shaped intersection: 1 street has a plowed swipe down it - at least for now. The other is blocked by previous plow ridges and is unreadable variable height ridges of drifting and previous plowing attempts. The birds are still being blown off the birdfeeders.
The birds holding their perches are going to be my time to shovel indicators.
