  1. I would be very very wary of boiler plate ice. Most of the bigger resorts will make snow to resurface so mornings can be good. But as soon as that surface is scrapped off watch out. Solid ice is concrete when you fall on it.

My buddy on the ski patrol at Stratton said today was a nightmare. Major melt down with full rivers going down trails. We really can’t seem to catch a break this winter

I love ME, am looking at lake houses there, but seriously, it isn't a place to be in winter, especially up there. That said, even parts of ME have had trouble getting enough snow in the 80's and 90's, according to my BIL, a lifer. He's complaining about snow this year though, again. Dude hates the snow. Hates NYC and NJ more, where he worked for many years. Tried FL, too hot. Can't make the guy happy.

I would say the exact opposite, that’s the exact place to be in winter. There are plenty of people who enjoy winter sports as much or more then summer. I absolutely love snow boarding, I would put a great day on the mountain with fresh snow right up there with a day of surfing. Maine has absolutely been the place to be this winter with two of the biggest and best ski resorts in the east (sugarloaf and Sunday river) having banner winters. Had I been there ridding fresh snow I wouldn’t have broken my collar bone on the ice in southern Vermont. It’s just too far of a drive for a weekend warrior like myself. Throw in all the other winter sports people love their (snowmobiling, ice fishing, hokey and many more) and you end up with endless winter opportunities

You brought DC winters with you....we know who to blame for all this now.

And they had a 12” storm. The winter NYC and BOS have had would be awul even by DC standerds. Having lived in the region for 4 years I actually saw my single greatest storm while there, 33” in PD2.

You can literally here the winds howling just above the surface here at my job (Inwood Nassau County just east of jfk airport along the south shore)

Winds have really died down at the surface post the last heavy rain batch. Based on upstream obs I wouldn’t expect much with the squal line. We have most likely seen the strongest winds for the day already.

I am sorry to read about your injury. I hope you recover quickly. Hopefully, February will wind up being snowy.

Thanks Don. I tend to agree that feb produces at least normal snow. This winter is nothing like 01/02 or 11/12. It’s been a string of bad luck. When DC is crushing NYC and even BOS.

  6. I think it would take an incredible amount of bad luck to make it through feb without at least one advisory level event for the coast. I would put the chances of that happening at less then 10%.

This winter has really really gotten me down. First I break my collar bone on solid ice (created by the awul pattern). And then I’m being crushed  financially with a lack of snow removal money. So if anyone really has a reason to be down on this winter it’s me.

The fact hat little storm yesterday did not develop and strengthen dragging down cold air behind it was the killer, it ended up just warming/stale out the airmass

This is a very good point. Had that storm been stronger it would have also helped to amplify this system further though. Not that it matters for the coast anyway. It would have made the icing threat much worse just Nw of the city.

  8. 36 with an east wind on the bay in South Wantagh. This ones DOA here.

still expecting a couple inches and some sleet on the far UWS. As others have said we will wet bulb during the thump. It’s all about now casting where the precip itself sets up. As of now it looks like it starts snowing north of the city before south so that in itself hurts

its because if people dont get a historic snow season they automatically oscillate towards thinking there wont be any snow lol.  This should at least be an average snow season if we get the type of February we're supposed to have, remember we already have 6 inches of snow in the bank and we need less than 2 feet of snowfall for the rest of the season to make average.

People in coastal areas and the city should be happy if we make 30 inches of snowfall as our seasonal snowfall total, regardless of any predictions, because thats the highest one should expect to get in this area.

My main point is calling winter over in mid January is nuts. Our climatologically snowiest month hasn’t happened. Throw in the fact that it’s an El Niño which are generally back half winters and great weeklies. I’m not saying a big February is a given but I would be shocked if we do not at least see average that month. Even though some think the incoming cold is wasted it’s not for the coast. It knocks down water temps. Good things are coming. And I still think this weekend has more frozen then people are expecting from Nw Nassau on Nw

when was the last time the nyc metro area experienced a serious ice storm?

Jan 94. Very very much on the table from northern queens NW. This is based on CAD and the NE wind. Throw in a little climatology too. I think the island outside of NW Nassau shouldn’t see much ice. Good thump of snow though with serious rates for a time could surprise ala feb 14

Same for me. I'll be in Long Beach this weekend where it'll probably be a quick inch or two over to rain. Where I am now may be up to a few inches and some sleet before going to rain, but this isn't the type of storm that does well on the coastal plain. It's your classic North and West storm.

Disagree. I think it rips ala feb 14 just long enough across the entire island to drop 3-6”. What happens after that is prob rain down there and ice northern Nassau west
