Interesting, it’s dumping snow at 3800’ now on the Stratton summit cam. I guess the warm layer is stuck somewhere in the 3000’ range.

I just had the worst drive of my life heading from dinner at Stratton to my house at 1200’ outside Jamaica Vermont. Even with a truck in 4 wheel drive I had to drive 2 mph with one set of tires in the ditch for traction. I had never experienced ice like that on a road. Took 2 hours to go 3 miles. Moderate rain and 28 will do that.

For those that didn't read Larry Cosgroves weekly newsletter he basically stated that between January 1st thru about the 23rd he likes the euro weeklies with a "washed out" cold look with snow potential being good for the Great Plains, Midwest and Great Lakes. He did say winter will eventually get here but the I-95 cities may have to wait longer which to me means we may not see any appreciable winter weather until the second half of January which is in line with what some others are thinking. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if we don't see much of anything substantial until the last week of January. If that is the case lets hope good things come to those who wait. We'll see.
Disclaimer: Not saying this is how things will play out but it is a possibility.
Fits with the default pattern of the 2010s. It’s close the shades for a couple weeks at least.

Why is it bad ? It's your own car if you buy it.
It’s the depreciation. The second you drive off the lot it’s like throwing dozens of hundred dollar bills out the window

So far, Isotherm’s winter forecast has been the most accurate....
Not a shocker there, the guys beyond brilliant.
About as benign a weather pattern as you will see, incoming. At least we aren’t wasting cold air with no precip. That, I’m ok with-

That was nuts on the uws, on par with last winter

That’s one of the better squalls we have seen in a while, maybe not as strong as the one last winter, but solid.

Light snow in Bridgeport. The entire landscape here was covered in ice this morning, very stark difference from NYC/Long Island.
There are cars here on the uws entombed in ice. Pretty cool to see!

Pretty impressive for JFK to record its wettest December on record by the 17th of the month. The top 3 spots have occurred in just the last 6 years. Just goes to show how wet our climate has become.

NYC sucks
Too much people, traffic and the rent is insane.
Yep, I’m putting in a few years building my resume here and then the plan is to move to a college in New England and run their grounds department and snow removal. Tons of schools up there that need a head of grounds. I’m so over New York City, I’d rather drive to work With no traffic from my 40 acre house.

Nobody is saying this was a severe ice storm. But we had some nice accretion. Even now the trees and lines are still glistening. Temp only 32.9
Had the same thing in wantagh surprisingly. Temp held at 31.8 for hours. Even cars were completely iced over. Makes sense for you up there but it was completely unexpected on the south shore

Very little freezing here; we have to go out in it. Hopefully it warms up and we can move on. I'm worried if temps drop any. But they shouldn't, right?
Temps are rising on the island so I would assume you will too.
WWAs advisory for freezing rain (warranted overnight) were just issued for the island just in time for the temp to crack freezing. Most significant ice even in wantagh for several years with trees sagging

Still holding at 32 at my station on Fire Island. NWS stations all reporting freezing rain on LI. No WWA from Upton. Yup.
Still 31.8 in wantagh on the south shore, glaze On trees and colder surfaces.

I am at 31.8 out here in Bethlehem PA with freezing rain.
I have a station on Fire Island that is also at 31.8. I don’t know about the precip type. Reports of frozen precip at the NWS sites in Suffolk Cty.
WWA from Upton for Suffolk?? So far only a SWS.
31.8 at the wantagh meso right now as well. Glaze on trees and cars! I was not expecting that here at all!!!!’

Your going to have to go 2 hours north of the city for a nice snow storm with this one, 80s style. I do not think anyone wants a crippling ice storm or mid 30s and heavy rain that we going to see south of there.

Flakes mixing in

Moderate sleet uws, grounds whitening

It's not a big deal in the Boros or LI, I personally love a nice sleet storm because it doesn't melt. Way less impactful than zr. Going to get washed away even if we get a more prolonged sleet than expected.
I’m in the NW corner of Manhattan with a little elevation. I have seen time and time again In these marginal setups this area behave more like the near Nw burbs then the rest of the city. We shall see how this one does, but using the forecast for the city for this area will get you burned

almost impossible for ZR to accrete on the streets of NYC unless it's been bitter cold for days--ground is still generally warm this time of year as well.
It’s sleet I’m worried about, sleet accumulates more efficiently then any other form of frozen precip. If we get a couple hours of sleet in the northern city this could end up an impactful event!

Thanks! I appreciate you taking a look. I guess it is clouds and some snow. Normally there are lights on the cams. I wonder if mountain ops turned the lights off so people will not look at the precip types all night! Regardless it’s been an interesting night here for sure! Still just freezing rain at the house at 1200’
