  1. I feel lucky we got almost half an inch of rain here in Williamsport before midnight last night. It cooled things off from 90s into the 70s, yes, but a very sticky 70s and it barely dropped more all night.
  2. Looks like I have been set up. What torture. Lower part of sky still white grey and blue. Has promised rain of yesterday but gone earlier decided to appear after all? No rain yet. But wait, despair may not be necessary. I smelled the rain a minute ago and it is coming down now. Let us hope it does some good!
  3. I just got on first time today. It was an unexpected relief to go from hearing your son was in an accident to seeing that he had already been discharged. Wow. I am so happy things turned out this way. Seems strange to think we were just talking about luck (and weather) yesterday. Then your son and family really needed some good luck and you got it, thank God. Best wishes for his quick recovery. Joan
  4. I can fall asleep and I can wake up again, too, over and over. Today it was 3-4 wakeups. I sure wouldn't want to pay for A/C and still feel hot at 82 degrees though. I just saw this at Twitter and copied it to share there. This seems like another great opportunity to think about an alternative feel better response to the heat: Popsicles and Prosecco.
  5. I just mentioned luck when itsrainingtime tried to bring me back to Earth. I will mention it again. Also it can be 57 at 2A instead of 2P. I am very flexible and the opposite of picky at this point.
  6. I know, I know. But it is too wonderful to dangle in front of me and then take away later. There is no fairness in weather but I am hoping to get lucky this time.
  7. Thanks so much for this. Much cooler in Williamsport than Canada. Who can ask for anything more? It had better verify.
  8. There is no one right answer but as someone without air conditioning with no plans to go out where there is any before the heat wave ends, I can only say I am headachy and uninterested in any unnecessary moving around. Monday I woke up about 6 times, last night just once. I woke up feeling drained both times. That overnight lows are not dropping as they once did is certainly no help. I have been hiding in my phone. Thank God I broke down last year and got discounted HBO. I can highly recommend Generation Kill showing Marines invading Iraq in 2003, which I just finished last night.
  9. I do not know anything about hurricanes really. But it is both fascinating and scary to me that so many signs of an unusual season are present this year. Now here is another unusual element to add to the list of exceptional things going on. For years I used to live across from World Trade Center in downtown Jersey City. During Sandy we had water coming from two directions: from the Hudson River to our east and New York Harbor to our south. After that I have always wanted the ocean to stay in the ocean where it belongs. I miss the NYC area but boy oh boy am I glad I no longer live where I used to there. I'd worry all this summer about what might happen.
  10. 12:14a 6/18/24: The wind kicked up awhile ago and we got .14" of rain. The wind felt cool next to the window but the air really doesn't feel any better now. A whole week of this with higher dew points than we had today (which was bearable) is going to be tough.
  11. More about heat from weather.com today. Here are their latest maps for July-September 2024. They start by saying "Summer still looks to be one of the hottest on record in the U.S." Williamsport is so close to orange-red border in July and August I figure if we are unlucky, we may end up even warmer than orange. https://weather.com/forecast/national/news/2024-06-13-late-summer-outlook-temperatures-us-july-through-september?cm_ven=hp-slot-2
  12. I think of our hottest days here in Williamsport--in the 90s--as New York City hot. When I lived in the NJ-NYC area, temps were a bit higher in the summer there, hit 100 from time to time and of course with the Manhattan heat island, were more miserable. I just checked though and here is what weather.com says for Manhattan and then Williamsport starting next Monday: 85 90 88 92 95 92 90 90 95 94 93 95 92 89 Temps higher here than Manhattan except for Sunday. If we hit 100 here this summer, I will scream. I don't think we have in last 15 years. Definitely not since I came home in 2015.
  13. This is too good not to share. From June 2 in Texas. It is a thing of beauty in its way but if I had actually been there, I never would never have thought that. Laura Hedien who took the video only got 11 comments about on Twitter. How can that be? https://x.com/lhedien/status/1797446848480739825 It looks much better on a phone if you go horizontal and let the image stretch out and breathe.
  14. Northern Lights Tonight? I haven't posted anything but continued to check space weather every day. The Sun has remained active. There was an X (high) level solar release and things are due to reach Earth today and tomorrow. G2 MODERATE STORM LEVELS POSSIBLE ON 31 MAY - 01 JUN published: Wednesday, May 29, 2024 22:26 UTC "A CME associated with the X1.4 flare, produced by Region 3697 earlier in the period, is likely to enhance the Earth's magnetic field late on 31 May into early on 01 Jun (UTC). Continue to monitor our web page for updated watches, warnings, alerts, and forecasts." Right now the aurora forecast is way up north but that will change since their graphic says it might end up visible in Idaho and New York. Williamsport is supposed to have clear skies tonight so I could theoretically see the Northern Lights tonight, if there are any to see. The various readings are much lower than last time so I am not expecting magic but I will take what I can get. Here is the link to the website if anyone wants to check. https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/
  15. Very surprised to see this headline this morning at wunderground.com. There are two ways to look at this. One is "severe weather-fatigue" for getting day after day of thunderstorms and maybe tornado warnings and tornados too. The other is "severe-weather-fatigue" after a week or two of PA grey cloudy skies or too many hot and humid days. I can definitely see myself coming on here complaining about "severe-weather-fatigue" if we get the very hot summer we are supposed to have. I might even have to go to "extreme-weather-fatigue" or even "catastrophic-weather-fatigue". Very useful phrase that really captures feelings about one day after the other of weather we are already sick of.
  16. I am so very sorry about your mother's unexpected illness and death. I hope you have a good trip home. It must feel so wonderful knowing you will be back where you belong among your family and friends when you arrive. They missed you so much I'm sure. Take care, Joan
  17. 5:53a: The good people of Williamsport will be up soon I think. Rumblings of thunder and blobs of all colors including purple on their way. In this sideways T-bone formation we and the bottom part of NE PA are getting ours first but many of you will get something prett strong later unless it breaks up first. 6:40a: Just like yesterday, rain and some thunder but no show. At this point pretty quiet. I am going to wrap things up. Things are not moving quickly over to Southeast PA.
  18. No show. Sun is shining again. Just that Big BOOM, a bit of regular thunder and heavy rain. The amount of rain predicted on Memorial Day increased to over 1.25." We will have another chance on Saturday or Monday but I am not going to actually wish for show to ruin everyone's long weekend.
  19. Severe Thunderstorm Warning with Rotation in Williamsport. Just started raining. * Until 730 PM EDT. * At 625 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Ralston to Collomsville, moving east at 35 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. * Locations impacted include... Williamsport, Montoursville, Jersey Shore, Muncy, Hughesville, Montgomery, Duboistown, Cogan Station, Ralston, Trout Run, Barbours, and Buttonwood. Radar has indicated rotation within these severe thunderstorms. Although a tornado is not immediately likely, tornadoes can develop quickly during severe thunderstorms. Will this be a show? It has been a long time since last one. Big BOOM! But no lightening-yet. Storm near us keeps shrinking in width. Getting windy and rain coming down hard.
  20. Light rail. Brings back memories. I lived right across from what had been designated a boundary of the fairly new Liberty State Park in Jersey City. State used eminent domain to force people out across the street on our block. It was empty for awhile over there and then lo and behold, they put in the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. This is what I saw: The Putt Putt. Serving hundreds of thousands of people yet I was astonished to see it for first time and never stopped being amazed. Just a toy Putt Putt of two light rail cars. Now it has three cars, I think, big deal. Wikipedia says it carries about 50,000 passengers a day. 24 stations. It did come in very handy at times for me but I mostly stuck with PATH train that went into Manhattan. I am all for public transportation but so many of the modern day additions are disasters and jokes more than anything. Why is that? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson–Bergen_Light_Rail So much for the Park. After Light Rail, the tan building went in and so did several other even taller buildings across the street. Park is still there but they definitely sold off land to developers just because they felt like it.
  21. Big sigh. I would like to think so but I can't say I really do.
  22. I am responding to Voyager too. The situation of white people living in struggling towns and cities often in rural areas is ignored and white people themselves who aren't doing well are invisible. It is certainly a scandal and something to be ashamed of as far as government concerned. One thing is that they get lost in so many statistics that shows whites doing well & assumptions that because many whites do well, all do. Lots of anti-Trump supporter feelings as well. I will talk of problems of white working class when I can. The hostility I get sometimes from well educated Progressive Democrats can be amazing, the same ones all for importing poverty and bringing in endless poor people who are not in trouble from other places for us to spend money on instead of ourselves. I get so mad at the unfairness of it all but I do not see much changing anytime soon, unfortunately. I will climb off my soapbox now but I couldn't resist saying something once others started.
  23. I didn't know Ontario was considered one of the Maritime provinces. But at least I am ahead of most Americans who don't know what a Maritime is. That is what the Megan Follows-Colleen Dewhurst version of Anne of Green Gables did for me.
  24. Oh man, I hope you can make it after all. It seems the fires we hear about are not that far east but I can understand you might just say to heck with it and go somewhere else instead. Last summer I had an Uber driver tell me his son was up in Canada on a fishing trip not too far from the fires. It turned out the really bad smoke was down here! Up there it wasn't nearly so bad so the son decided to go anyway and make the best of it.
  25. I hope they can manage to make it through the summer without any big fires up there and that they get some good rains. It is supposed to be an awful year for hurricanes. Maybe some tropical storm remnants can make it up there to add to the rainfall.
