Central PA - Winter 2021/2022

I see that the same collapse that has happened to you all to my south has happened up here in Williamsport. The very stubborn Wunderground -- which stuck with 5-8 until past noon and then went down to 1-3 like the NWS advisory by late afternoon -- now is calling for a whopping inch. The NWS is still sticking to 1-3 snow and sleet, .1-.2" ice in its advisory. -

Here is the 4:25a report from Williamsport. We are all mixed up; our high is the current temp of 55 now and will quickly go down to 44 by 6:00a and reach 31 by 5:00p. Winds are 21 gusting to 33. Next week is mixed up too. We have Monday-Wednesday in the 50s; it will be 30s for the rest of the week with Wunderground predicting 6" of snow on Thursday and another 1.5" on Friday. A lot of snow and ice is gone but there are still some snow piles that are much higher and in far better shape than you would think they could be, considering we didn't get that much more than a foot of snow all winter. -

It is my great pleasure to give the Williamsport report for 6:35. It is still 53 at the airport in Montoursville (high 54). Tonight will be 40 when our average daytime high is 38; tomorrow will be much closer to average with 43/19. I enjoyed being outside so much. A bit of spring weather in February can be wonderful and it was today. -

We are down to 31 in Williamsport at the airport in Montoursville at 1a. We have had our flood advisory extended from 12:15a until 7:00 and our winter weather advisory goes until 10:00. I have been hearing water flow down the hole in the cellar floor for hours but not anymore. The cold rain that is coming down at a good.clip is sticking as ice to the steel porch railing. I hope we go to sleet. We shall see. -

This is what Wunderground now says for Williamsport: "Snow this evening will give way to a mixture of rain and snow late. Some sleet or freezing rain possible. Low near 20F. Winds E at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 100%. 1 to 3 inches of snow expected." Yet I see our Advisory was just updated at 8:30p and it says: "WHAT...Mixed precipitation. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch." I assume Wunderground means 1-3 more, not total. We are at 21 now, supposed to go at 1:00a to mix at 33 and reach 39 at 5:00a. -

NWS now has us down in Williamsport for Wintry Mix in their graphic tomorrow night. No more initial period of just snow. Here is their recipe for what will become a frozen-over mess come late Monday afternoon or evening: Tonight Rain and snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain and sleet before 1am, then rain, possibly mixed with snow between 1am and 2am, then rain likely after 2am. The snow could be heavy at times. Temperature rising to around 39 by 4am. East wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible. -

Got to plug the phone in so after three hours I will temporarily stopping watching the synagogue hostage situation on the tv while being on my phone and thinking about Sunday's storm. It has been a strange day so far for sure. Seeing that tremendous cloud over Tonga from the nearby undersea volcano erupting was a strange surprise last night, too. -

This is the latest Wunderground has for us in Williamsport: Tomorrow Night 100% / 4.4 in Snow in the evening will mix with and change to rain overnight along with gusty winds. Some sleet or freezing rain possible. Low around 25F. Winds ENE at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 100%. Snow accumulating 3 to 5 inches. The changeover to rain is supposed to be around 1am with the overnight temp rising to 38. As I see it, I will be stuck walking/sliding/hoping not to fall on God knows what frozen mess for two weeks of below average temps if I don't shovel the snow shortly before the rain starts. If I end up out there shoveling in the rain, I will be beside myself. There will be a little morning snow too after the rain. Ugh. I wish I could just cancel this one. Sorry guys but this is how I feel. -
Wunderground has upped its snow amounts for Williamsport, the ones that were not even there earlier this morning. Now they are calling for 5-8 on Sunday night, 3-5 on Monday.

We went from predicted up to .1-.25-.5 ice in about a day and a half in Williamsport. I was not expecting an ice warning but we have one now. I sure hope our power stays on. It is rare for us to have an outage but we did lose it for about 14 hours a few years ago and we didn't like it at all. We didn't buy more batteries for the flashlights since then either. Meant to but didn't, isn't that what they all say? 7:30a Update: I feel doomed. -

Wow! I did not expect to see the oranges and reds. We are just missing some heavier stuff here in Williamsport and I hope our good luck continues. We are 28 now with wintry mix and won't hit 32 for another 9 hours at 1pm. That little 2" of snow with ice on top may be a big pain. The city never plowed my street, which was a first. I assume other smaller streets didn't get done either. It is hard to believe that last Saturday was New Year's and that the holiday season is finally over. I'm not ready to slip and slide after so many recent days of 40s and 50s but now winter is really here. -

It is 50 at Montoursville Airport which is about 5 miles away from me in Williamsport and our low will be 46. I wore my sweater to go to the grocery store earlier today. Tomorrow will be about the same Last year at this time it was 26 and we still had about all our record breaking two feet of snow out there that fell on Dec. 16-17, 2020. I wonder how things will be at this time next year? If we have windows open and sweater weather for a second year in a row on New Year's Eve, I won't know what to think. -

I also got a 5. We could have done worse. Thanks for sharing this. Everybody have a great New Year's Eve tonight and a Very Happy 2022. I expect to be up late and will check in to see if anyone gets "inspired" to write something good. -

People are busy and not hearing everything so I am going to share this doomy and gloomy but I am afraid accurate prediction about January from one of those disease experts always on TV. I myself have been meaning to think about what I need to get before Omicron hits every area hard and I hope to God I get what I need by the end of next week. This makes me more aware how out of luck I might be if I don't stock up: "Right now we have a very imperfect situation that's going to require some very imperfect responses,' he said. 'Over the next three to four weeks, we are going to see the number of cases in this country rise so dramatically that we'll have a hard time keeping everyday life operating.' 'Already we are seeing it in our healthcare settings where we can lose 10 to 20 percent of healthcare workers who are not available to work. 'We are seeing that right now in critical infrastructure areas where people can't come to work.' https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-10355849/US-hits-record-nearly-500-000-Covid-cases-24-hours-Experts-says-viral-blizzard.html -

I am sure glad I am not there. I read this new article at CNN and it has two weather terms I do not think I have ever heard, one about waves and the other about rapid changes: "The hurricane-force wind gusts being reported are being attributed to "exceptional mountain wave amplification," which is a major increase in wind speed as air flows over and down the mountains into the lower elevations that can occur under very specific atmospheric conditions." "By morning, the region will experience "weather whiplash," going "from fire to snow," according to the weather service. An advancing cold front will push into the area and bring snow showers to foothills and front range by sunrise." They are supposed to get 5-10" of snow. Everybody will just love that. I can see myself calling something "weather whiplash" in the future for sure. https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/30/weather/colorado-wildfires/index.html -

I found hope on this Christmas Day. I went to weather.com hoping their 14 day forecast would show some changes and it does for Williamsport. We will leave our daytime highs in the 40s behind starting the Monday after New Year's until at least Saturday, Jan. 8, the highs will be in the low-mid 30s and the nights in the 20s. We will have opportunity for snow that lasts past the morning. Will we finally get snow worth talking about? We shall see. In any case, I hope everybody had a great Christmas. A very quiet day here. -

Yesterday I wrote about the oddness of Williamsport getting over 24" of snow on Dec. 16-17, 2020 and then breaking our temperature record of 58 a year later. I didn't realize that Thursday was a scorcher all over the Northeast. I happened to see a chart posted by Buffalo Weather in the Upstate NY subforum that showed cities well to our north such as Syracuse hitting 67 and Montpelier, VT hitting 61 when here in Williamsport we only hit 60. At 5am we are 51 and will be about the same at 5pm. I wish we were not getting daytime rain again for the second Saturday in a row with Christmas almost here and I am sure I am not the only one thinking that way. -

What a difference a year makes. Last December 16-17 we got record breaking snowfall of over 24" here in Williamsport. I was shoveling snow in the middle of the night on Wednesday last year. Now I am at my leisure looking at our forecast at weather.com. Wunderground is calling for a high of 58 so I am surprised to see the NWS is calling for 64. That puts us at breaking the 1971 record of 58 for December 16. -
I want to see the Northern Lights! It's 4:00a. I knew I wouldn't be able to in Williamsport with the predicted cloud cover and then the fog. But CNN's talking about other people seeing them who always do like in Russia and Iceland and I will admit I envy them. I have never seen them and this would have been my chance if the sky had been clear.

Won't we here in Williamsport end up getting more rain than predicted, according to the radar? Also note that the weather.gov forecast mentions a particular hour tomorrow, between 11-noon. I do not recall seeing anything that precise before in anybody's text forecasts. Tonight Showers likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy early, then becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 52. South wind around 7 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Friday A slight chance of showers between 11am and noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 64. West wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

That's too bad. I wish more younger people would post. And more people in the northern part of our area would be good, too. Right now when I pop in a couple times a week at least, I am the only one from Lycoming County and no one else is near me at all.

It is 73 here in Williamsport. We got to 78 today and it was humid here too, which I was not expecting. Our overnight low was 59. The average for 10/15/21 is 63/43 and the record is 82/28. We were supposed to be cloudy and rainy this afternoon but luckily the skies stayed partially blue and the rain never came. Not a bad closing for the bonus two extra weeks of summer we have had all month.
-
I am sitting here quite comfy at 3:25am. The average high for October 13 in Williamsport happens to be the current temperature, which is 63. The average low is 42. Later today we are supposed to hit 73. This month so far has been heavenly for this time of year. I have yet to go out in the afternoon in long sleeves, much less a sweater. One night I went to the store around 9:00 and put a sweater on. That's it. I am not ready for the change over on Saturday and I am not ready to give up daylight savings time in a few weeks, either. I will always think of the summer of 2020 as the summer of blue skies -- with the drought we had a lot fewer cloudy days. Looks like 2021 will be the summer that didn't want to leave.

We have watches and warnings and special statements for Williamsport and the rain total was increased to 2.31. The radar still doesn't look that bad but the ones getting it are keeping it. Some quiet thunder, the sky is not completely dark.

We are supposed to get a surprise soaking here in Williamsport. Late overnight the rain for today was supposed to be around .25, I think. Now it is supposed to be 1.77, mostly between 4-6p. I figured there would be a wall of color coming our way on radar but that isn't true. I am staying home from the library so we better get something too big for umbrellas to handle!
