  1. There's a good book on this I bought at the Bronx Zoo years ago called Manahatta; talks about the island before it was a mega city or even close; Canal St used to cross a canal, the water supply was a fresh water pond in lower Manhattan IIRC, possibly called Wreck Pond.
  2. Never seen this board so bereft of conversation....shows how bad things are
  3. You wouldn't be missing much from the looks of that.....
  4. Some folks nearby have though. It's been those of us in NE/ECNJ that haven't seen much, which was the case in many years in the past. What didn't happen was regular appearances of 60-70 degrees....
  5. North of the Raritan is not CNJ though. Jackson is about where CNJ is. I learned this when I taught there and called it SNJ, I was corrected.
  6. But what would make it a good storm for us? If the same atmospheric conditions prevail, we'll be in the same boat as all season, waiting for crumbs. What would have to happen to give us a decent shot at something?
  7. It really isn't early at this point. But there is some decent time left, however not unless there is a pattern change. In this pattern those of us near the coast are just not gonna see much. My rule of thumb over the years is to ignore any "storm" that is forecast at 1-3, because it is so negligible. My yard is already back to brown, or rather a dull green...
  8. The accumulations have been laughable down my way. Not sure we have cleared 2 inches yet in any event, and a couple didn't clear an inch....at this point a 4 inch storm would be a major deal in these parts..
  9. COuld be. Then one year it will suddenly turn around. that's how it is here. For more consistent snow you have to move where it does that every year. This isn't the area for that. So we enjoy when we get some. Now, many people don't enjoy it and would be content if it stayed mild or snowless or both forever.
  10. Had a fox running around in the backyard yesterday. Sucker got over a six foot fence somehow. Thought is was a cat at first.
  11. I was completely oblivious in those days, focused on developing my journalism career ( something that was tough even then ) and fishing and writing about it; I had a temp job in the mailroom at AT&T; before the gig economy free lancers made do by working temp jobs. Went to work unaware of what was about to happen; 1/4 tank of gas, one of the worst cars ever built ( a 79 Monza )no boots, no shovel, no salt, no winter gear. Lucky I made it home.
  12. Jan 87 was brutal. I don't remember the forecast being for that kind of snow. It was whiteout conditions and I drove my Chevy Monza from the Bell Towers in Piscataway back to Colonia, by following the tail lights in front of me; I knew not to get on 287 so crawled through the back roads til I got to rt 1. My brother was stuck for hours in New Brunswick he worked in the prosecutors' office. A friend abandoned his car on the GSP after digging a trapped motorist out; he walked to a hotel and slept in the lobby. The state police towed his car. It was the worst wall of snow I've ever seen, til Boxing Day, which I watched from the comfort of my couch...
  13. Because this winter has been a turd. I'm frankly planning my garden and preparing my fishing equipment. Might finish reading War and Peace. Gotta re-read Moby Dick first....
  14. You really didn't miss much. It was still solidly in the realm of nuisance event. Some people got to 3 inches. I topped out at about 1.5. And my snow blower malfunctioned. So I'm fine if we're done with snow for awhile.
  15. Daughter's boss is from Utah. Wanted to know why it was so slow tonight. She said it was because of the snow. He said you've gotta be kidding....as putrid as the last few winters were for snow IMBY, NJ's "harsh" winters are cited as one of the big reasons people want out of here ( the taxes, congestion, foul air and water, and that Jersey charm, are also factors for sure )and yet a guy from Utah didn't even think this amount of snow would have an impact on mall traffic ( but its great for supermarkets ).
  16. We did have steady rain here in part so f NJ, topped out at just under 2, but again I think that was due to lousy rates and time lost to dry slot. Sometimes, well often, I don't get much even when areas around me are cranking....it really is puzzling.
  17. Meh. And a lot won't. Way it is. Wasn't expecting LI to do so well, just goes to show how fickle these things are. Got caught in hours of dry slot here. Which is typical. It is what it is.
  18. All rain here now. How some thought we could get 4 out of this is beyond me. Think we got a little over 1, and in keeping with the maxim that you can usually expect less than any models suggest....
  19. Just took it out again. I don't think its the gas. Ran well for a few minutes than starts losing power. I've been around enough lawn mowers and snow blowers and junk cars to know when something is up. So a pro will have to look at it. Besides, the gas is just fine in my other blower. The one that sparks fire...other than that it runs ok....
  20. I'm thinking you're right. It started after I put the new gas in, which may have gotten some snow in it. Well actually it likely did. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best one. Not sure why the two stage one ran ok with it.
  21. Man we are desperate need for something bigger than this. But it was nice to see. Hope we manage another one before spring!
  22. Sleet didn't hit here yet but it will in minutes if you have it there.
  23. Oh that's happened a lot. I go to Home Depot, buy the tool I need. Then I quickly lose it. I'm pretty sure I have undiagnosed ADHD.
  24. It's running rough like it's fuel starved. Could be a mouse got in there and clogged something up. Or bad gas, though my other snow blower worked fine on the same gas. A little snowmelt may have gotten into the fuel because the plastic cover on my portable gas can blew off. Or could be a spark plug. One clue, when I tilted it back to check the rotors, it ran a lot better. That sounds like some sort of fuel issue to my amateur self. I love the electric toro, but it is pain to deal with the extension. And the cordless ones just ain't there yet IMHO.
