  1. And then the winter of 94 sailed in and people were like WTF? NYC doesn't get this cold, it doesn't snow this much.....make it stop! We were almost back to normal in 95 ( no snow, mild temps ) until Feb delivered a nice event. Then in 96 people were again aghast, 1-2 feet? Are they serious? I remember hitting the local Pathmark the day before, and it was like the zombie apocalypse was coming. And yet, none of us believed it would be that much snow, keep in mind a foot was considered gigantic....
  2. There are hordes of tiny flies buzzing around my front yard.....this was inconceivable at this time of the year when I was a child.
  3. I am sitting at a corporate event and not one person here misses the snow. Everyone I spoke to said that they never want to see snow again. And these are all scientists who understand climate change. They just hate the snow. So I popped in here to read Anthony’s rants about lack of snow...
  4. Was just reading an article that said warmer temps are ruining ski seasons everywhere, even in places where there's enough snow, because the pack doesn't last or gets slushy and this affects some events. Article mentioned how some places are getting more lake effect because the lakes aren't freezing, and that Cleveland has been getting less snow and crappier cold springs too. Mentions the east coast as having a really bad year with lack of snow. And a report from ME dept of wildlife that comes to me noted that it has been a poor year for ice fishing because of warm temps, at least down state. It ain't happening this winter. The snowblowers are emptied and in mothballs.
  5. I'm frankly tired of this damp gloomy weather. it's like an endless late autumn. Once in awhile the sun peeks through but its windy and a little colder so you can't really enjoy it. It's not quite cold enough to feel like true winter, and not nearly warm enough to be spring like. It just sucks. About another month or so and we hopefully will warm up enough to at least enjoy a walk in the park.
  6. Perennials will often start sprouting in Feb; they emerge slowly in the cold and can take a few snowstorms. If Feb is snowless and mild, you will see them emerge. They'l slow down if it gets colder. What's more unusual is the flies and mosquitos.
  7. The climo wasn't that different in the early 90's; it was mostly warm and snowless until 94. Winters were very much like this one, with some colder temps for sure, but not by much. I remember buying a big down parka from LL Bean and not needing it for years, and when I did it no longer fit ( it's an age thing ). The 93 event was the biggest in years, and quite out of the norm; it also mixed, keeping it from being that big around here. But 90, 91, 92 were mild, though we had two small events in March 92. In 91 the Star Ledger asked what had ever happened to winter?
  8. it isn't rare. Anyone who lived in the 80's and 90's can tell you that. I've seen 4-5 years between significant snowfalls. In fact there were only a few events of note throughout the entire 1980's, and most of those were in 1982 and 83. Then 87. There were probably a few others but they were localized and certainly not IMBY. In fact, there was no good reason to own a snowblower. Didn't snow that often.
  9. Flu is always mutating. Novel coranavirus is just that, novel.
  10. Heck I've seen a local groundhog out and about already. And looking fat and sassy too...
  11. Yeah I think we just gotta tough this one out, enjoy it for what it is. Even if we get a few more low snow winters, they aren't likely to be this warm, IMHO. We still had the few 2-4 events in the 80's, with the occasional blockbuster. This is going down as a serious clunker at this rate, but maybe March will pull us out again.
  12. They should be ok. There are likely many more people infected that have been able to fight the virus off. Too early to say how bad it is yet. Keep in mind that regular flu has killed 10k already in the US alone this season. That's a much bigger threat.
  13. Ok, so post what should be acceptable in banter and be done with it.
  14. Post of the evening....and that was before he got the hair piece....
  15. Not for me it isn't. I taught it for ten years. I just disagree with BX. Banter should be for anything, but now it can't be for climate change because "one of those people" might start up with their nonsense? I'd say those views belong in banter, not a serious discussion thread. But it ain't my board, and in truth I do try to avoid being baited into a debate, so "whatever." And that's all I have to say on it. On to the boring weather.....
  16. Indeed. I don't just live with them, i've worked with them for 31 years. Facts. ( as the kids like to say )
  17. I do think we are getting due for something better next year, as we have several years now with not much to write home about. Some areas in this subforum had some decent events, not so much mine...but it could just as well suck again next year too.
  18. Justin isn't one of those people though. He is an actual scientist, whose research is tied into climate change , and hardly anyone goes to the climate thread. I assumed banter was ok for anything. But whatever.
