  1. As I've noted in the past, I learned of this dictum from a Rutgers met; this is true for most of NJ anyway. We had the same discussions in the early 90s about the lack of snow, at which time it had not snowed significantly in some 5 years. 92 would feature two smallish storms in March, then a decent Feb 93 event followed by March ( non ) Superstorm in NYC ( 10 icy inches ) before 94 would set a new bar, to be broken two years later in 96. After which we went another 5 years with the snowblower in mothballs.....we can very easily see little snow for half a decade, I've seen it a few times in my life.
  2. Been through enough of them that I generally write major snows off for the winter especially if December is snowless. Gotta worry about mice infestations destroying the snowblowers at this point; two years of no usage. Talking to folks in other parts of the country and it doesn't feel that wintry in most places.
  3. There was a famous basketball coach who once said, give me a tall person and I'll make them a great player. One of the reasons I really dislike the game.
  4. You are not going to last around here if you have no idea what you're talking about but pretend that you do. I'm not a climatologist, but I am educated and I can read, and the experts are clear about what is going on. It's settled science. If you can't accept it you won't find a welcome audience here. Remember, science does not care if you have a grudge with Al Gore or not. There are plenty of published papers on this topic you can read; hell, you can just read the abstracts and that will convince you.
  5. Is there a point to this? Someone had a record low so that negates volumes of settled science? If I am misinterpreting, my apologies......
  6. Nothing beats 94, but you might have been too young for it. I mean, it was cold, bro....plus ice and snow and everything in between, capped off by an epic March sleet storm that was like 5-6 inches. It was insane.
  7. As long as this winter remains mild and I can get out fishing and catch up on all those years I missed while slaving away at a desk, I'm good.
  8. Since politicians make policy, those that want to do something about it must speak about it. When they don't, their voters get angry.
  9. Yes jan 87 featured a blockbuster, actually two one in north Jersey one in south Jersey. i was stuck on 287 for 5 hours in the Jan 87 storm; never saw snow come down like that in my life.
  10. 86 was almost snowless. Had a dusting or so in March. Had started the flounder season in the bay already, last week of Feb.
  11. It was mostly slush as I remember it. Yeah, I was around back then, and an adult.....
  12. Climate change is not a political agenda. Nature doesn't care about politics.
  13. Just be sure to outta there by April....
  14. Feb 83 and Jan 87 had pretty good blizzards. And each was the only one for years.....87 not really touched again until March 93.....that's how long you can go without big snows.
  15. It's been pretty damn cold on the water, I'll tell ya that....OTOH there are still bluefish and porgies being caught inshore while people are chasing the migrating striped bass. Bluefish are not cold water fish; they should be gone by now ( we are glad to see them making a comeback ). We think this weekend storm will push everything out; it will be a "pattern changer" for fisheries. The warmer climate has pretty much ended our winter fisheries, which once featured huge whiting ( "frost fish " ) runs through mid winter; we still see some cod offshore but not like the old days; some is clearly from overfishing but some is also due to warmer temps.
  16. We used to joke about that out on the deck....come on out with us in the afternoon and we'll show you a prevailing wind... a SE that will kick your ass...seen it break the windows on a 65 foot head boat. Water pouring through the cabin....
  17. I was just out at sea today and the captain was telling people to come out this week because Sunday was gonna be a mess.
  18. That was a real dud here in CNJ....5 inches of sleet. And totally predictable, Mitch Volk was on here the night before saying that it was unlikely NYC and surroundings would see much snow. Based on March storms struggling to get over 10 inches.
  19. We love ya. Don't ever change. But I don't really expect to need the snowblower this winter. Don't even know if it it'll start.
  20. It was downright balmy and stormy. Blew my front screen door clean off when I opened it.
  21. I saw that too and laughed at it. Why would anyone pay attention to JB? Frankly, these long term forecasts remind of the guys at Bloomberg trying to predict the economy.....they're pretty good at explaining why they were wrong.....I'd throw fisheries biologists in there too but that's a little too inside baseball.....
  22. Generally in CNJ if it doesn't snow in Dec you can write the rest of the season off. I think Jan 2016 was a rare exception, maybe Jan 2015 not sure. Of course the sample size is small but I remember reading this some 30 years ago from a Rutgers met and it seems pretty reliable.
  23. My BIL had his plow out this morning....hates snow. Augusta area.
  24. Was pretty cold on the water off the Rockaways most of the day; fog and southerly breeze and overcast. Sun broke out late but not enough to save the day.
