  1. Pounding here right now. Unfortunately it only seems to last about 5 minutes.
  2. Snow picked up briefly here but not really doing much right now. With this wind it’s going to be impossible to get a measurement.
  3. Welcome to meteorological spring. Snow pack definitely took a hit overnight as temperatures rose to low 40s and the dew point wasn’t far behind. Looks like this is the beginning of the end of winter. Let’s just hope we have warm dry weather to dry out my backyard. My dog is starting to bring in mud again after going out this morning.
  4. Never really made it past 40 today, sitting at 36 right now.
  5. I still have a solid snowpack except I’m starting to see some bare spots where there’s drainage and also under trees where the snow depth was less and the warmth from the tree trunk absorbing solar radiation warms the air.
  6. It looks like Quebec City got a good amount of snow today and it’s still snowing there. https://www.ville.quebec.qc.ca/apropos/portrait/attraits/webcameras/place-dyouville.aspx
  7. I got my second shot of Pfizer vaccine yesterday afternoon and I haven’t experienced any side effects coming up on 22 hours (knock on wood). I just read that younger people experience more severe side effects because their immune systems have a much more robust response to the vaccine.
  8. I took a drive down the north side of Oneida Lake this afternoon. I stopped in Cleveland and took a picture of the ice fishing shacks on the frozen lake. You can also see snowmobile tracks in the snow.
  9. 850 temperatures on the Euro look like anything but May for the next 10 days. A couple of mild days but some pretty cold air over the northeast. It’s an entirely different look from the GFS.
  10. I don’t throw in the towel until St. Patrick’s Day. We’ve had some big snowstorms in mid March in recent years. After that I would take a big storm but snow generally melts faster than it falls. And as a point of reference, the record highs in Syracuse the last couple of days were set in 2017 (yesterday’s was 68) and we had a major storm in mid March.
  11. Matt, I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. I’ve lost both my parents and it’s very hard. Every once in a while life deals us a gut punch that puts what’s important in perspective. I hope you have family you can lean on. I have a big family and leaning on each other at times like this can give you strength and solace.
  12. So you agree with my assessment that this was an average winter.
  13. 76.3 inches for the season, 27.0 in February. I’m still giving the winter a C+ (I grade on a curve). To me a D winter would be numerous torches and sporadic snow cover. I’ve had snow cover since December 29.
  14. I’m down to 37 now but it is easily influenced by the sun during the day. Actually starting to get a slushy accumulation now.
  15. Nice area, you’re actually pretty close to Gloversville.
  16. It’s snowing pretty good but my temperature has only fallen to 38. It’s going to be hard to accumulate today.
  17. The snow has started here. My thermometer reads 41 but I don’t think that’s accurate, the solar radiation must be hitting it through the clouds.
  18. I’m familiar with Amsterdam (the first job I was assigned to with the state DOT was the arterial project in 1977, shows how old I am). Those streets have some steep grades to them. They were late plowing our street yesterday but at least it’s flat here.
  19. 3.5 inches after 8:30 am to go along with .4 before so 3.9 inches total. The 3.5 inches was on 0.34 inch of liquid so almost exactly 10:1 ratio.
  20. I just looked at the latest observation from KBUF and noticed the wind is gusting to 38 knots. I didn’t realize it was that windy in WNY.
  21. A while back I gave my reasons for calling this winter average even if we’re below average on snowfall. So I’m rating it C+/B-. If we were to get a major snowfall in March I might raise it to a B.
