Easiest way to do radial is measure the total thickness from end of ice to end of ice and subtract out the thickness of the branch, then divide by two.
Thanks - I always wondered which way it was measured.
-
Is ice accretion measured as a "radius" extending out from a branch or is the the entire diameter of accretion?

Nice glaze of ice on everything here this AM - nothing major, just very wintry.

If you really want to geek out, we can discuss the mechanics of how salt melts ice.

FWIW - water reaches a maximum density at approx 4 C or 40 F. The density of water decreases as you approach the freezing point.

For 10:1 ratio (1.2 inches of liquid water in the cubic foot with density of 62.4 lb/ft3), a cubic foot would only weigh 6.24 lbs so a cubic yard would be 27 times that for 168.48 lbs.
For 8:1 ratio (1.5 inches of liquid water), a cubic foot would weighs 7.8 lbs so a cubic yard would be 210.6 lbs.

It sure would be nice to have one of them there big 'uns show up in the models and stay somewhat consistent moving from Fantasy Land into reality. It feels like it has been a while since we have seen one of those, odds are this won't one won't hold up 8 days out (sure would be nice if it did though).

Hopefully the radar starts to fill in - what's currently heading east over PA looks pretty spotty.

The 18z rgem was run by a Canadian version of Snow88.
I wouldn't mind that outcome, but..
Sad commentary that a potential increase of an inch has become a moral victory.

Might this be the one the breaks positively - albeit on a small scale event? I'm hoping things continue to look positive tomorrow afternoon.

Pixie dust flakes - no sleet falling ATTM.
-
The ping fest continues with a fair amount of small snow grains. Temp has been steady at 18 degrees.
-
Sleet with a little snow mixed in - holding strong at 18 degrees.

Any chance the FV3 is a blind squirrel?

The 0z NAM (I realize it is the NAM way out in time) verbatim would certainly be workable here in NW CT.

I can't wait for yet another mud-season.
Unfortunately we have been stuck in mud season for months already. It has been either snow covered mud or mud.

It has become clear how this winter will go for me. From Dec through mid March we'll get no huge storms...clearly caused by my acquiring a Kubota with front snowblower and thus preventing all major events requiring such a machine from occurring. I've chalked this up to my wife working with nature to say "see you didnt need that tractor anyways!"
On or around March 15th everything will change because my wife has a scheduled C-section planned for the 20th. As my winter lust for snow is replaced by paranoia about roads and conditions whenever we have to get to the hospital, I KNOW the biggest hum-dinger of a storm will come barreling our way and I wont have the time or mental power to track or enjoy it.
Thats how it works.
I'll take responsibility for the SNE snow drought as I upgraded from an open station John Deere with a snow blower to a cabbed John Deere with a snow blower.

Let me know by 1045 bor so what you guys have
5.5 inches at 10:35.
-
Barring a complete collapse we should easily clear 6 inches before this is over.
-
Closing in on 4 inches - coyotes chattering in the distance makes taking measurements more interesting.
Perhaps a Coastal Storm on March 2nd for SNE????

We got about an inch and half here in New Hartford.
