Doesn't all this thunder mean 10 days from now a snowstorm, I'm hearing so much thunder we might be in for a Blizzard.  I wish.  :snowing:

Top Six Southern Winter Folklore Sayings

    1. If you count the morning fogs in August you will know how many August mornings were foggy.

    2. A heavy crop of acorns will lead to fatter than average squirrels next spring.

    3. If it thunders in winter, 10 days later it will have happened 10 days ago.

    4. If you study the bands of the wooly worm you will know how many are brown and how many are black.

    5. Snow that lays on the ground for more than three days is dirty.

    6. A ring around the moon means your Lasik surgeon screwed up.

Well, the Daytona 500 is finally over. Now the NASCAR season can begin!

I never got the appeal of artificially limited cars going around the same oval 250 times to find out who can be the first one to arrive at where they were when they started.

For those feeling the angst of a SH!TTY winter so far, just remember that the Winter of 1960 in North Carolina went SNOWLESS until Mid Feb of that year. The record for TOTAL Snowfall in a season was broken in Charlotte, NC. It snowed on February the 14th and then another lull until March 2nd, where the snowgates opened up and it snowed back to back to back. They ended up with 27" overall, which is way higher than the average 4-6 b/s we see. Just giving some food for thought that winter is not always over until April, etc.

I can't wait for somebody to bring up March 1960! As if we have a shot at that 59 years later in this litter box climate!!

    lol  Too late.

Pear and Cherry trees are starting to bloom and the Maple trees are budding.  Looks like an early spring

If the climatic trend continues the peach crop will eventually be impacted by not enough chill hours to produce fruit. Some southern areas have had issues with this in the last few years.

Hot off the press. The 18z FV3 is having a Big Mac Attack. Dumps 11.5 inches on Mac and Shettley Feb 9-10. Big snows all over Carolinas and back into GA.

I still have problems accepting taking maps 2 weeks out even remotely seriously.  A few years ago you would have been tarred and feathered for even posting a single map that far out.  I also don't buy how much better the models have gotten as a reason. There hasn't been a single storm that I can remember where we knew three days out what was going to happen. Besides, at my age, you don't look too far ahead.  Hell, I don't even buy green bananas.

Sup. drives me nuts with a 2-hour delay...gaining nothing as temps go from 14 to 15 in 2 hours...the delay gains them nothing

Maybe, maybe not. I don't know their schedule but school buses here run in the am dark this time of year. Better visibility is a good thing on possibly questionable roads.

Dang, this didn't even work out in AL/MS as far as I can tell (nevermind east of the Appalachians which you figured wasn't going to happen).  And they canceled school in some of these areas, too.  Disaster.

That seems to me to be a rather questionable definition of a disaster.

Dang.  The number of people that I now 'ignore' is getting out of hand.  Can the moderators please just take a minute to nicely touch some of them on the shoulder and say, "Hey, we like you, but read more, post less?" A little banter thrown in here-and-there in the discussion thread is fine, but folks, c'mon. And, I like to see something showing up that warrants it's own thread, but......just dang.

And.... the Saints were robbed.  That is all.

You've averaged less than two posts a month over the past eight years. If you want to participate fully please do so. If you want to simply lurk and read that is fine as well. What is not a good look is basically being a lurker and then suddenly trying to control what others post.

Some 13 year old in the Discord server I'm in has only been studying the weather since 2016, yet he is trying to tell me "Florida never has pure snow" despite me posting multiple storm totals from various years, and all models that show FL snow are wrong. I have been studying weather for 18 years, I know what the hell I'm talking about.

I've been studying the weather for 55  years. No, you don't.

yep, pulled that from one of the original sites us old timers used.  i used 1 degree intervals to show the extent of the -1c temps. Unfortunately it's not easy finding sources that show 950 and 975mb wetbulb maps.
here it is with 2 degree intervals.

Looks like the 12z ICON is on board for a winter storm. At hr 156 has the snow line from SW NC to Raleigh then Rocky Mount. It only shows rain/frozen so I'm sure there is some ice below that line.

Edit: Has the surface freezing line from Greenville SC to south of Charlotte, to south/east of Raleigh.

    New theorem proposal.

Anytime a model, no matter how far out, has the snow line through Raleigh it should be taken seriously.

It's interesting to compare this year with last year. Last January we experienced record cold/snow in the first half of January, only to flip to extreme torch in February. This year is shaping up to do the same but in reverse order.

I don't know about that.  All my calendars still have January before February. Good luck though!

2018 was... eventful.  Wife had two brain  surgeries and a stroke (from the second one).  But she's recovered wonderfully and is seizure-free and driving again!  I'll take a boring 2019, please.

I could take or leave the cold at this point, I don't much care... but getting tired of all the rain.  The ground is perpetually soggy and the range is just a giant mud pit.

Glad to hear your wife is doing well. Wishing you a boring 2019.

Hey do you guys keep getting the pop ups at the bottom of the page, sometimes also the top of the page but mostly the bottom, very annoying.

You know fellows is winter going to ever arrive, at least the cold air, this is ridiculous.

Feels pretty good here. 66º at the moment and my weed yard is definitely beginning to green up. Low heating bill on the way. My big screen TV alone is enough to heat my den. :)
