I'm from upstate NY and to all of you I say...... Please steal our snow!

Our CocoRahs site close to my home has 93 inches. Didn't "feel" like that good of a winter for me. That includes 16 inches in April, so true winter was under 80 inches. -

Our best snow pack was in November. We went sledding at a friends house, and also did some XC skiing around that time. The rest of the winter was hit and miss. I judge mainly by snowpack because we are into nordic skiing. January sucked. February was barely passing. Decent amount of skiing but felt like we were always short just a few inches to make it really good. March sucked. April was a horror show. Cold, damp, multiple snowfalls but what are they good for at that point? And May 10-20F below normal, No thanks! -

I hear you and I'm sorry I came across that way to you. I can assure you I'm no liberal. There's only one picture in my office at work that isn't of my family. It's Ronald Reagan. I'd describe myself as a never-Trump conservative. Unsubstantiated attacks from both side of the political aisle deserve to be scrutinized, no matter which side you are standing on yourself. -

Fair enough, but being liked has never been a priority for me. But lighten up a little. You post lots of good information and thoughtful analysis. That post last night sounded like the unhinged content straight from the Hannity show. Wondering where it came from? -

You didn't have enough information (fair enough).....yet you jumped all over a supposed Democrat conspiracy regarding the testing and spewed it out to a message board. Can you see the problem we have as a society when people take that approach? -

Look, you may or may not agree with this President's policies but it's really clear that Trump and Pence are complete assholes. They have no respect for anyone or anything. -

If anyone is really interested in all the mechanics, I wholly agree with looking at Calculated Risk and particularly reading the Ubernerd series of posts. It was incredibly informative and well written, and fascinating to watch as it unfolded in real time back then. One of the authors, a woman who went by Tanta, died of cancer as the whole thing was unraveling. -

OK last try, then I give up. You posted this: "More evidence that this virus is attacking primarily the blood cells. The acute respiratory distress that is listed as the leading cause of death as a result of covid is simply a byproduct of the lungs overworking to replenish oxygen to blood cells that can no longer carry oxygen." It shows a complete lack of understanding of what the article is about, as well as how the virus attacks the body. The virus is not attacking red blood cells. It is causing microscopic thromboemboli to form in some patients. As I noted above those form from platelets and associated coagulation factors, usually in the setting of endothelial cell dysfunction. The thromboemboli lodge in the lungs and impair gas exchange causing hypoxia. The red cells are working fine, doing what they do which is transport oxygen. There just isn't enough oxygen for them to transport to satisfy the body's needs. If the virus attacked red cells you might expect to see hemolysis. Note that hemolysis is never mentioned in the article. Clear enough? -

Yes Luke, you are wrong. You keep repeating wrong information, and it isn't making it any more right. It's OK to admit that other people know more about a subject than you do. When Lake Effect King is in here posting about snow we listen and learn, and we all know he's the expert. No need to one-up him. Maybe it will make you feel better hearing that I am an MD, practicing Hematologist/Oncologist. Maybe it won't, I don't know. -

There is nothing wrong with me. I'm trying to get the facts straight. You're the one focused on red blood cells, despite the fact that the articles you linked aren't about red blood cells. The articles are about abnormal clotting in COVID patients, and the consequences that arise.. When you hear about clotting, think about platelets, endothelium, and fibrin. Not red cells. Not hypoxemia or other terms you heard in a basic human physiology class and are now tossing around in a word salad. You don't always have to be the smartest guy in the room. It's fine to listen to other people who know more about a subject than you do. Nobody will think less of you for it. -

The article has nothing to do with red cells as you posted. It is all about clotting. Not red cells. Your posts remind me of the phrase "Often wrong but never in doubt." -

Your interpretation of the article is incorrect. It's not even close to what you state here. -

The IWM has offered the best options trading that I have done in more than 10 years. That chart is broken in so many places... And (I don't know who could be this stupid, but nonetheless) it gets run up every Friday afternoon for the last several weeks. I buy my puts around 1500 on Fridays and by Monday morning I have a nice profitable position to trade. -

We need the residents. They work for very little money and cover huge amounts of hospital care that we don't otherwise have the capacity to cover. The doctors who aren't working now, like orthopedics, plastic surgery, opthalmologists are very expensive and unqualified to be doing hospital care. We are hemorrhaging money until we get those specialties back to work, which should be very soon, at least in upstate/rural NY. Not having our trainees arrive would be a much bigger and longer lasting financial disaster for our health care system. -

Dear Leader may not realize (or care) that in the next 6 weeks thousands of foreign medical graduates will be entering the country to begin their internship and residency programs. Senior residents will be graduating at the same time. If they aren't replaced we will be missing thousands of doctors from our hospital care systems. These are the doctors who provide the majority of the care in major American hospitals. Who does he think is going to take care of the COVID patients? -

I disagree with some of your other political posts, but that's for another discussion. But I agree this can't be one size fits all response for the entire state of NY. Here in Otsego County we have a trickle of new cases, typically 3-4 per day. One death so far. Some stress on our healthcare system but manageable so far. We're rural and people are distancing well. But: Our economy wasn't so hot to begin with, and now it is being obliterated. We have already committed to having no school through April. Our children need to get back to school. Our adults need to have an opportunity to earn a living. If case numbers remain low by late April we need a mechanism that gets kids back in school, and at least a partial resumption of economic activity while keeping tight surveillance for flare ups of the virus. I'm not saying that's what should happen in Queens or Brooklyn but we need to give it a try in rural counties with low case loads. -

I think it's important to remember those without symptoms haven't had symptoms yet. LEt's see what happens in the next few weeks with that group before drawing conclusions. -

I'm sorry.....it sounds like you are closer to volunteering at this point than working in a professional position. We thank you for your service. One good thing about volunteering is you can decide to do as much of it or as little of it as you like. If it's stressing you out too much at current levels perhaps a reduction in workload is in order. -

Step up, my man. My kids parents both work in heath care. We are busting our asses, literally risking our lives every day now to better and possibly save the lives of others. It's not easy.....and having our kids home from school unexpectedly isn't making it any easier. And you're bitching about having to work, as in actually performing the job you get paid for? For an entire extra week? In a time of crisis like this, you're bitching about having to work and actually earn your pay and benefits? Is the 10 weeks off you have coming up this summer not enough? Do you not see the plight of so many others around you who got laid off and have no pay, and no benefits coming in? How tone deaf can you be? -

Abbott is putting out a new test that will detect COVID infection in minutes. It will be available in early April. Imagine how different the course of this disaster would have been in America if we had that test a month ago. If we had a pandemic response team at the NSC for example, or merely even a competent President who listened to briefings on what was happening in January and had started working with industry to get PPE stockpiled, and these rapid tests developed. We would have been testing and rapidly isolating individual cases and outbreaks instead of watching thousands of Americans die as we are now. -
The beginner slope was open, plus most of the main side. They had the easiest trail off the main lift closed.....not sure why as there was plenty of snow. Maybe that's where they held the snowmobile races I saw advertised for Saturday night. I could see lots of snowmobile tracks as I looked down. Windham annoyed me going with their new ski pass system a couple of years back. I don't need more annoying cards to keep track of. I'll still go but Plattekill is the same distance for us and if there's good natural snow we will take Platty every time.

Looking good. We went to Royal, which is where we usually start our season each year. Bountiful natural snow, some of it still ungroomed powder. A great start to the season.
