Just got power back after 9 days. Won't have wifi for awhile as the cable lines need to be replaced but I can live with that. Finally nice to have A/C going and the fan.

DVN found damage consistent with 140 mph winds in a destroyed apartment complex in SW Cedar Rapids.

One week later and I'm still without power. Might not get restored until this weekend. Anyways, I'm glad that I still have a house to live in. Sleeping when the room temperature is in the mid 80s is not pleasant lol.

Possibly only the worst hit areas.

NWS DVN found damage consistent to a category 4 hurricane in Linn County. Winds were up to 130 mph. Of course, I doubt there was ever a derecho that produced winds in the category 5 range. 130 mph is almost as high the winds in a derecho can go.

Late reply here. Trees in the backyard are shredded, as with all of the trees in the neighborhood. No damage to the house asides 3 broken windows. I don't anticipate getting power back until at least Saturday or Sunday. Got battery powered fans and non perishable food from Waterloo Walmart yesterday. Also, very glad that we still have running water. Alliant is going to have a field day taking care of that cluster of shredded trees that brought down power lines behind the house. At least no power poles were snapped near where I live. Worst storm that I've ever been through.

I didn't lose power from this although I had a brownout that lasted for about one second (happened about a minute after the winds started). The complex of storms didn't look too impressive on radar and I figured that we would only get some sub severe wind. Boy was I wrong. Several gusts of up to 60-70 mph here. The worst of the winds happened before the rains started (3-4 minutes), which mean that the gust front was ahead of the complex. Winds lasted a good 7-8 minutes here. Hawkeye surely cashed in on this although as you said, he likely lost power. Over 15k people without power in Linn County right down (down from over 18k a bit earlier). Not as bad as June 30, 2014 (which was the last major straight line wind event here before today).

Well, that was fun. The MCS didn't look impressive on radar but boy did it pack some nasty winds. I got about 6-8 minutes of 60-70 mph gusts. Had a brief brownout about 1 minute after the winds started. The winds came 3-4 minutes before the rain and they were the strongest before the rains hit. Pretty sure hawkeye_wx cashed in on this, although not sure if he has power. I never lost power here.

Mid-week potential of something somewhere

DMX issued Winter Storm Watch for some of their counties. I smell a bust since the models disagree (hardly any significant snow for central Iowa). -
Winter 2019-20 Medium/Long Range Discussion
Natester replied to Hoosier's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
GFS has been showing a major ice storm for eastern Iowa for next Wednesday since the 18z run yesterday. Rates don't appear to be heavy but with the duration (over 24 hours) the ice accretion would easily exceed an inch. -
Depending on the storm track, I could very well look at 6+ hours of icing although temps will rise during the time. Likely will get at least .20 of ice from this, if not a quarter of an inch.

January 10th-12th Winter Storm Potential
Natester replied to Thundersnow12's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
High rates is what slowed ice accretion here. Just a bit of a glazing on everything with icicles hanging down. Lucked out here. Had we got over a tenth of an inch of ice, then it would have been a different story (potential power outages due to the wind). -

Freezing rain has changed to heavy sleet. Changeover to snow imminent. -

Still freezing raining here. Not quite a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation, though. Should change over to snow in a couple hours. -

KGAN forecasting a significant ice storm in the southern counties. As for here, forecast now calls for a tenth of an inch of ice. -
January 10th-12th Winter Storm Potential

Very little ice accretion on trees and powerlines. Freezing rain might linger for a couple more hours although it's predominantly sleet right now. -
January 10th-12th Winter Storm Potential
Natester replied to Thundersnow12's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
It'll be really hard to acreet on trees/power lines since the temps are very marginal (31F to 32F, plus I see water dripping on the powerlines), despite the somewhat low dewpoint (in the mid to upper 20s). Best accretion would be later when temps crash although the window of accretion will be very narrow as when the temps crash, it'll turn to all sleet. -
January 10th-12th Winter Storm Potential
Natester replied to Thundersnow12's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
Mix of sleet and freezing rain right now. Was expecting pure freezing rain, not sleet and freezing rain. Not cold enough for the power lines to ice up as the temps are very marginal. Might change later as temps crash this evening unless we go to pure sleet. I was thinking that the power lines would ice up for sure since the dewpoint is in the mid 20s. I was wrong. -

Band of freezing rain steadily making it's way NE in central Iowa. Going to clip Cedar Rapids in about an hour or hour and a half. Temp is at 30F. -

3k NAM gives Cedar Rapids a siggy ice storm. 12k NAM doesn't show that. -

Oh, well, the models disagree (except the HRRR) when it comes to Erie, Illinois getting sleet from the first wave. -

You lucked out. Last time we lost power in an ice storm was back on February 24, 2007 (got a little over a half an inch of ice). Was in the dark for 26 hours. The ice threat here should be very short lived (1-2 hours) before changeover to sleet/snow.
