March 14-15 Severe Weather Outbreak

I lived right on the ocean in the SE for 30 years. I've had it with "wind events" lol. This season is starting just like last years. I'm too old to be running around 500-1000 miles to get a glimpse of one 20 miles away. I have graduated to a sit and wait chaser. If it comes it comes . (Plus there's just too many people out there now, it's ridiculous) -
Yes they are. I came over a hill while driving last year and there were 6 digging into a small deer. My little Integra was surrounded by these giant birds leaping into the air in a panic. Thought I drove into Jurassic park for a minute. I've always been fascinated by them because of the way they fly and how big they are. They're one of the largest birds you'll encounter around these parts with wingspans of 5-7ft. Interestingly they won't bother with anything thats been dead longer than 48 hours. So if you see them eating something technically you could still eat it (with some definite high temp cooking lol). They can smell a freshly dead mouse under a leaf from a 1k feet up. I grew up in southern CA and when I was a kid we would lay down out in a field and not move and within a couple of minutes a couple of Western Vultures would cruise over. We we're convinced they were gonna come down and pick our bones like some old Spaghetti Western movie lol. They are an amazing bird and they are protected.

First Turkey Vulture this past weekend. Should look like the skies over Berlin in 1945 pretty soon

Its been so long for some good storms around here it'd be like chasing a girl when I was 14. Wouldn't know what to do once I got one

Went to check on a couple of my favorite local fishing spots today, couple of 100+ year old spring fed gravel pits. 1 is about 10 acres the other about 15. They are both 80 to 100 feet deep in spots. I was amazed, both still completely frozen over. They haven't been frozen completely over this late since I can remember. Not even 2017-18, there were significant areas of open water over the deeper pools even then. Not this year, they are still solid enough I chucked a baseball size rock as far as I could and it didn't break through. One of the pits I know where there's a shallow (maybe 3ft deep at high water) bar. Its the bed of the old road the vehicles drove on to get to the "pedestal" that the main shovel sat on in the middle and loaded them. Lots of gravel pits have these and if you know where they are can catch some 5lb'ers (thats big for my neck o the woods lol) by dropping a Texas Rig along them during really early spring. I usually start the first week of March, they've been spawning progressively earlier over the last 15 years. Well today, I walked out probably 50ft over that shallow bar and nary heard a crack (had my waders on lol). Probably coulda ice skated over it. I know its melting but man. Every creek and stream is still frozen except White River and it's still 100% in some areas but I've noticed its going pretty quick now here.. I'm really surprised how much ice is still around. Glad my heart won't let me ice fish anymore, that mighta been MN ice fishing this year... well may WI lol. On a side note, spring 2018 was one of the best Morel seasons in recent memory, lets hope this past deep freeze wakes them up, been pretty disappointing the last 2 years at least for me

Winter 2024-25 Medium/Long Range Discussion
Jackstraw replied to michsnowfreak's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
Haven't had Spring thunder (besides a passing rumbler) around here for at least 4 years. For that matter haven't had Summer thunder (besides above) for about 4 years either. I can prove it by the date on my dogs Xanax bottle. That Thunder Ice back in January was the best (and loudest) light show in years. Been nothing but serious fizzle domes above me in like forever. -
I'm on about 3 acres kinda nestled in the woods so I've got decent protection from the wind. We got 2 maybe 3 after the days lake streamers. But even with the bigger snows the beginning of January, this ones been the most fun. Believe it or not we had 2,3, and 4 footers out here today. First time I've been able to hop the dog in the truck and legitimately go out and go drift busting out here in the sticks in 3 or 4 years. I know all the hot spots and they didn't disappoint. One notorious road that drifts will commonly have 2 footers with a 2 inch fluff snow and stiff WNW winds. I've seen drifts bigger than my truck there before in a 10 inch snow. Easily had a 3-4 foot virgin snow wave 8ft across that we blasted through. Sorry haven't been able to do that in a long long time. Fun time. Now we freeze lol.

Well if that panned out I'd be like the old time Mt. Dew bottles..."It'll Tickle Yer Inards!" lol
-
Well at least most of us got a few inches to cover and make it look like winter for this brutal latter half of Feb coming up. I cannot stand arctic tundra crap and snow cover, for whatever reason in my little circus of a mind, makes the frigid temps feel not so frigid. While we exit this piss ant pattern, March is Big Dog season in my part 'o the hills so bring it! lol
-
You'd think we were in that forum over there... to the east... where all that chowders at lmao.

The prophet as usual

Nah, hostility shouldn't be tolerated on weather boards. Pissed because it didn't pan out? Sure. Hell, disappointments my middle name when it comes to snow lol. But hostility because someone else got the flakes, nah. I'm always happy for them, begrudgingly lol
-
It's 34 and -SN, dime flakes, here. I ran to the store an hour ago and still had ice all over my truck. Definitely not following the forecast temp curve so far. I see KIND pulled the trigger on a WWA for their far northern counties. Still think we could eek out 4 maybe 5 out of this. Classic setup for MBY to over perform.

I'm calling 4 as this back end defo sets up this evening. I'm gonna be on the tail end of it. Models support that call somewhat, its a bit high, by I don't care lol. I NEED snow cover to end this near record setting cold for the last half of FEB coming in for here. Cold is not justified without snow!

The rest of us in Back Side Betty Weenieville are looking good late Sat into Sun on these 0Z runs. Yeah I know, I'm on a slippery rug until tomorrow lol.
-
Ours is coming very late Saturday night into Sunday. If we get any it's on the backside and all of the models are consistently showing a backside hit after the liquid, which is good. The ground around here is far from warm so sticking won't be an issue IMO. Keep the faith! lol
-
Well if that's 3-6 here I'll take it lol
-
Hey man, a lot of us down here in kitchen sink land have a shot at 3-6 the night of the `16th into the 17th lol. I vote to add those 2 days because this system has 2 personalities lol.
-
If MBY is gonna get a wrap around butt kick (for me it's 4in lol) this is the kind of storm to do it
-
And for properly waiting until the day of because of these fallible models lol
-
I'm hanging popsicle sticks on the clothesline tomorrow to give me something to suck on while I'm curled up in the fetal position until march lol
-
That full run of the 12Z Euro to finish the month is ridiculously cruel. I'm not even going to post an image of such cruelty
-
I'll take that 00Z Canuck on a date lol
