  1. Nice--it's come a long way. Anyone know what this crap is and how to get rid of it? Thanks. Meanwhile, eager to get mowing this morning.
  2. How high do you folks mow? My first run was through I used the highest setting--4" (joke away). I think that's what I used at the old Pit, but it seems taller here. Maybe just because it's a smaller yard.
  3. Tried out the new mower last night (I miss the old John Deere). Cut on the highest setting (4"??). I might bring it down a notch once I get into the swing of things, but definitely want to keep it on the high side.
  4. My backyard will be a tough thing from a climo-timing perspective. The regrading, etc. won't be taking place for at least a couple of weeks so
  5. Not too many concerned about that for the foreseeable future.
  6. I'm hoping I might be able to try out the new mower later this afternoon, but methinks it might still be too wet.
  7. https://www.scotts.com/sites/g/files/oydgjc106/files/asset_files/Seed_growth_chart.pdf I wouldn't be surprised if the cool high temps of late and lack of sun might make things a little slower this year. At least we haven't had to worry much about watering.
  8. My new Toro arrived the other day. I just went out to assemble it only to discover they only sent one of the two bolts needed to attach the handle. Hopefully I can find one at Home Depot rather than having to wait for them to ship one. If I can get it, I hope it dries out enough today to mow.
  9. LOL. I don't think I scolded. Lawns have always been important to me. Lots of seeding each year. I wasn't fertilizing with well, etc. You might recall I frequently would post pics of my mowed lawn from the prior Pit 1.
  10. Thanks. I've gone ahead and put down soil and raked in some additional seed. If it makes it even a little better, it will have been time/money well spent (and not much of either, frankly). 2/3 of the strip between the sidewalk and street looks like shit, too. Lord knows what the previous owners had going on. The remaining third is lush. Stay tuned on that--and for the backyard follies once that project gets underway.
  11. Thanks. I wonder what that area would be prone to it if not the rest of the yard. What will waiting until fall allow? LOL. I miss the serenity of it. That said, I really like having Dunkin' Donuts 1/2 mile away.
  12. Here’s the disaster spot. The picture makes the rest of the yard look pretty bad too. It’s better in reality.not this area though!
  13. Might be wasting my money, but I'm putting some more seed down on the front lawn. There are some bad patches there that suck the big one. Any thoughts on how to best take care of those? I had fertilized the lawn a couple weeks ago Lastly, what are the thoughts on Lesco seed? I just picked some of their sun/shade mix. I used to use the west-county blend from Agway back in Shelburne.
  14. The fact that my wife is agreeing to move forward with the project despite the cost of it speaks well to what an utter disaster it is.
  15. disaster. lol at JP reference. so true.
  16. The front lawn seems to be coming in pretty nicely with the exception of one patch which is brown/barren. I wonder what the former owner might have spilled there. I had dropped fertilzer and seed on the lawn over the last couple weeks. Hopefully that will take care of that patch (maybe 5 x 5). Fearing it doesn't, I welcome recommendations on how to repair a patch of lawn like that. Meanwhile, just gave the go-ahead to a landscaper for our backyard grading project. I'm not sure if the amount of loam is a good indicator of how much of a disaster this is--but the project is calling for 32 yards of it. He doesn't expect to tackle it until late May/first week of June. Of course, I'm hoping for sooner! Photos to come once this begins.
  17. Japanese knotweed is the worst. We had a ton of it in the area we had converted to lawn. Getting rid of it was a slow, painstaking process. The first thing we did was put down a landscape cover below the loam we brought in. That helped, but this shit would still grow underneath it/between the seams. I used to go out wiht my coffee in the mornings and yank out the little shoots. Doing this over time (a couple seasons) and frequent mowing we were able to get it under control. The stuff is just horrible though.....grows up to 4"/day.
  18. What a difference a week makes.....green, flowers, buds. Flipping a switch. What do folks do for striping (no, Kevin--I"m not looking for directions to the Blue)? Did you buy an attachment? Make your own? Needing to buy a mower and want to be ready. TIA.
  19. Got seed down on the front lawn last evening; hopefully that will fill in some rough areas and generally provide some further density. I had a landscaper take a look at the backyard disaster. Grading, filling, removal of a lot of crap. Still waiting on an estimate.
