  1. Black bear mothers are much less protective of their cubs than grizzly/brown bears.
  2. I really don't think you heard drought-talk. I think you read a post and a lot of people laughing at it. Sort of like expecting 1953 last weekend..... Happy Independence Day, America!!
  3. The temp was reported by a vacationer from Lunenburg.
  4. Nice--world of difference! I mow a 4" height so hopefully that'll suffice.
  5. Thanks. The lighting in the pictures masks the hideous barren spots. I don't think I'll be completely confident in it until next spring.
  6. While I"m sure it will continue to fill in, I think the grass is in enough to recognize I need to do some additional seeding. What are folks thoughts on this--any reason to wait until after a first mowing to put it down? I'd rather get it in in the next couple of days and perhaps hold off on mowing until 2 weekends from now (maybe even longer depending on how it looks).
  7. The new grass is growing unbelievably fast. Just from this morning to tonight it went from things you needed to search for (like my picture from earlier shows) to now having large patches of greenish tint. I just finished watering.....eager to see what happens over the next 24 hours. One thing that's kind of a bummer is that I'm not able to move the sprinkler to the center of the new area without walking through the other areas. So, I might find I"ll need to do some additional work on that after the other areas take hold.
  8. The seed and starter fertilizer were only put down a week ago today. fingers crossed.
  9. Watching grass grow may be a recipe for tedium. Knowing that it is growing is reason for celebration.
  10. We have two chestnut trees (they're behind the garage in an overgrown area so they hardly are even noticed. I only did because I saw their blossoms. I'm not sure if they're american chestnut or horse chestnut. I'm no intending to walk through the poison ivy to find out.
  11. It does the trick! I'm happy we have some cool (or at least not hot) wet weather the next few days to help with the germination. I have quickly accepted that any efforts to keep her from walking/peeing/pooping in the seeded area are doomed to fail.
  12. Thanks! I wish I could take credit for it, but we hired out for it. If I didn't have a wedding to pay for I'd be up for getting more plants.
  13. We're getting there. Now the watering and waiting....Looks better in real life.
  14. Clearing along the back fence took place yesterday. I think the roc garden will disappear today. Not sure if the intent is to have everything done today or not. I'm guessing they might still need another day. Looks like a string of COC will accompany the new seeding. I was hoping I wouldn't need to do a lot of watering myself. Alas.
  15. there was another one on my deck yesterday. I haven't noticed any on our oak or evidence of eating. Might get a better idea once the landscapers clear out a lot of overgrown crap along our back fence. Supposedly, the work begins today. I'm psyched.
  16. Nope---this is before any work started. The circular area is where they once had a pool. They're going to take out that crappy raised garden and regrade so we have a slope rather than a 4' cliff. Hopefully the grass will come in quickly once it's planted.
  17. Well, the disaster of a back yard project is about to begin.
