What the hell is that?

LOL. I don't think I scolded. Lawns have always been important to me. Lots of seeding each year. I wasn't fertilizing with well, etc. You might recall I frequently would post pics of my mowed lawn from the prior Pit 1.

Thanks. I've gone ahead and put down soil and raked in some additional seed. If it makes it even a little better, it will have been time/money well spent (and not much of either, frankly). 2/3 of the strip between the sidewalk and street looks like shit, too. Lord knows what the previous owners had going on. The remaining third is lush. Stay tuned on that--and for the backyard follies once that project gets underway.

Might be wasting my money, but I'm putting some more seed down on the front lawn. There are some bad patches there that suck the big one. Any thoughts on how to best take care of those? I had fertilized the lawn a couple weeks ago Lastly, what are the thoughts on Lesco seed? I just picked some of their sun/shade mix. I used to use the west-county blend from Agway back in Shelburne.

The fact that my wife is agreeing to move forward with the project despite the cost of it speaks well to what an utter disaster it is.

The front lawn seems to be coming in pretty nicely with the exception of one patch which is brown/barren. I wonder what the former owner might have spilled there. I had dropped fertilzer and seed on the lawn over the last couple weeks. Hopefully that will take care of that patch (maybe 5 x 5). Fearing it doesn't, I welcome recommendations on how to repair a patch of lawn like that. Meanwhile, just gave the go-ahead to a landscaper for our backyard grading project. I'm not sure if the amount of loam is a good indicator of how much of a disaster this is--but the project is calling for 32 yards of it. He doesn't expect to tackle it until late May/first week of June. Of course, I'm hoping for sooner! Photos to come once this begins.

Japanese knotweed is the worst. We had a ton of it in the area we had converted to lawn. Getting rid of it was a slow, painstaking process. The first thing we did was put down a landscape cover below the loam we brought in. That helped, but this shit would still grow underneath it/between the seams. I used to go out wiht my coffee in the mornings and yank out the little shoots. Doing this over time (a couple seasons) and frequent mowing we were able to get it under control. The stuff is just horrible though.....grows up to 4"/day.

What a difference a week makes.....green, flowers, buds. Flipping a switch. What do folks do for striping (no, Kevin--I"m not looking for directions to the Blue)? Did you buy an attachment? Make your own? Needing to buy a mower and want to be ready. TIA.

Got seed down on the front lawn last evening; hopefully that will fill in some rough areas and generally provide some further density. I had a landscaper take a look at the backyard disaster. Grading, filling, removal of a lot of crap. Still waiting on an estimate.

I will likely put down some seed today. The upcoming several days will provide some natural watering.

Thanks....I raked it out yesterday. With the upcoming rains, I feel good about putting the fertilizer in. It's not a pre-emergent, but I think I'll let it do its stuff and then put down seed. Perhaps next weekend will work given the rains this week to help the fertlizer get drawn in.

I would not fertilize anywhere near my water supply.

Well, I think we're doing some major overhaul of the backyard disaster, so I have nothing to concern myself with that at this point. In the front though, I'm looking to just do a quick and dirty job without any real focus on ph-levels or any such things. So......I'm guessing I need to: 1) rake out all the dead stuff 2) fertilize--any suggestions of type? I figure that's more a concern for me at this stage than brand 3) seed. How long after I fertilize? Thanks!

The blistering BDL temps don't help much either. Kidding aside--he does a great job.

I'm seeing what an utter disaster the back yard is at this new pit. They once had a pool that they must have had to do some excavation for. I need to bring in a shitload stuff and topsoil to work that. I"m not sure that's going to be happening this year. I think the front/side will be salvagable. A few quick questions: 1) I imagine step one is just getting a soil test. Do they have those at home depot/lowes? 2) Are there any initial things I should do regardless of the test results wrt to treatment? 3) The front is east facing with little shade I'm guessing until mid-afternoon. Would you use a full sun seed for that or would a mix suffice? 4) The side is more shaded and is on the north side. I'm guessing a sun/shade mix would suffice on that as I'm not sure how 'shady' a true shade mix requires.

Over 30 hours of continuous snow at this point. I'm not sure if we can claim "days and days", but "days" works.

Congrats, Ray--that's awesome. Makes for a great winter finale. With the exception of an hour or so yesterday afternoon, I haven't been able to see across the river since the snow started. No idea of accumulations. We've probably received close to 10" since the end of the day yesterday. Snowing nicely now, progged daytime accumulations today of 1-3".

LOL--too funny. That is a painful sight though.
