Yeah, interesting...lots of popcorn showers/storms on either side of the Bay this afternoon. And a somewhat derecho-ish looking line just on the other side of the Apps heading this way as well. We'll see...

Stunning photography...as always. I've observed and learned so much from the way you compose your shots. More to the point...I took it for granted for the few times that I traversed it over the past several decades, but as truss bridges go, the (former) Key Bridge was one of the most streamlined and majestic truss bridges I've ever seen. And your photography perfectly documented that over the years, so...thank you for that.

Yeah, late last evening was the most rough/tumble stormy wx we've had in these parts in awhile...great light show! Ahh, MAN, that sounds PERFECT!!! It's kinda stinky hot/muggy down here in the burbs -- currently 91 -- but I'll gladly take it cuz for a change, it's mostly sunny and NOT raining! And always remember...when it's sunny and not raining in late spring and summer, enjoy life like your dog does (as Kona was doing here yesterday afternoon).

Saw that cell (one of only 2-3 smallish cells left on radar at that point) dead-on targeting B.Creek on my final radar check last evening and thought, "Bet Mrs. J stays up for this one." Sounds like you didn't have a choice... Currently 69 and muggy. Some showers to our SW threatened to graze us 30 min ago...like yesterday afternoon's storms, they've missed us, but a line of stronger showers, maybe some lightning, getting its act together and heading this way now. Gotta head out to cover the patio tables/chairs...so much for working out there today.

Adding to my own observation...the STW *just* came through on the wx radio. Again, odd. It's usually instantaneous on the wx radio.

So...did anyone with a wx radio get the actual alarm/notification on this? I see it was issued at 3:09, but my alarm didn't go off at all in the last 10 min.

So...those corded hedge trimmers? The kind that one typically has to plug into a reeaaallly long extension cord, to lug around the extent of one's hedges lining the front of the house? Yeah, I was doing the lugging of the trimmer last year about this time, was at the far reach of the 100 ft extension cord and down to the final two hedges, and I wasn't paying attention to the tautness of the cord and....sliced right through the extension cord while coming around the back of one of the hedges. It's a truly humbling experience. The upshot is that my wife insisted I order the Makita cordless hedge trimmer two days ago (we already have the Makita battery powered mower, weed whacker and leaf blower), so that I can get the hedges done before the holiday weekend WITHOUT destroying any more 100 ft extension cords. A new Makita cordless toy...I can't wait!!

2024 Mid-Atlantic Garden, Lawn, and Other Green Stuff Thread

Interesting question....and we have probably 10x the amount of mushrooms in both front/back yards, that we "normally" get during a given year. I'm assuming it's due to those several wet stretches over the past two months. -
But of course...it's Memorial Day weekend! Living in this area 30+ years now, I can remember far many more crappy Memorial Day weekends (e.g., rain, storms, overcast) than not...

Good looking doggo! And it appears that you got more sun than we did just south of Capital beltway yesterday afternoon, though we got a few cloud breaks and then mostly sunny after 5-ish or so. Currently 62 with some fog, though not the warned pea soup I guess others nearby are experiencing.

My wife is doing yeoman's work keeping the pansies alive on the front stoop, which gets full/blasting southern exposure sun from about 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. This collage of pics, however, was taken between last weekend and this weekend during our "less than sunny" weather... -

That's an amazing photo...and props to you, for going "against the grain," and using a P8 Pro!! -
While I remember going through all of this with our two sons (currently 29 and 27) not ALL that long ago...I distinctly remember you sharing about the older and younger Ms. J's over the years (for a decade or more!) on this board, and I can't help feel somewhat empathetically wistful. I started out following your posts for when you shared absolutely AMAZING stories about your cooking/baking (especially your soups!!)...but it was nice to read about your family's adventures through the years as well. It's so hard to wrap my head around the fact that THAT much time has flown by...not just for your own daughters, but for our sons, too. Just the way it goes. And my in-laws and parents were right...the older you get, the faster it seems to go! However, like my wife and I rediscovering what it's like to just be "us" in recent years...I'm sure that you and Mr. J will successfully travel that same path. P.S. -- Both of our guys have been out of our house for at least 5-7 years, and the best part? My youngest's former bedroom is now my well-decked-out and totally comfy home office...something I've wanted the entire 20+ years we've lived in our home.

Yep. Currently 62, heavy drizzle. I'm weird, in that I occasionally like a full day of drizzly onshore flow so I can stay inside and be lazy/read/stream...but I'm good now, after the lengthy stretches of rain we've had in recent weeks.

Yesss!! I noticed in the new trailer, too, that a presumably upgraded version of "Dorothy," complete with a new set of aluminum can copter blade-fitted plastic sensors will be making another appearance...

I fear you may be right. Twister was cheesy on paper, but was improved with the (then pretty good) CGI SFX, and then really took it home with the leading combo of Paxton/Hunt, backed up by a talented and likeable supporting cast. Gonna be hard for the Twisters crew to capture the same lightning in a bottle (ha ha)...the blonde dude from Twisters seems to keep playing the same character, or slight variation thereof, that he did in Top Gun Maverick. I'm sure I'll at least rent the new sequel. But I can find a silver lining in most cinematic clouds...I'm one of those few people who mostly enjoyed the Pacific Rim sequel several years back, when the Rotten Tomatoes critics and audience scores (and still are!) in the tank...
-
I think some of the CGI effects hold up fairly well when still watching the original movie...particularly when the big ole twister is tearing up the barn during the last 20 min of that film. Just watched the sequel trailer...looks like the same formula, the same cringe-tastic dialogue, but that's alright because we're just here for the scenes of destruction and mayhem, right?? Actually, some of the most effective scenes in movies like this are the suspenseful slow burn build to the mayhem -- e.g., seeing Aunt Meg's buzzsaw-shaped windmills (great choice, BTW, for your front yard in OK's tornado alley!) spinning faster and faster in the first film in advance of something coming in the night, or the new sequel's apparent rodeo scene where everyone feels bits of debris raining down and then all spectators simultaneously get the cell phone warning . Yikes!

Aurora chances in this part of the world are awesome...I'm personally hoping for cloud breaks. However, do not under any circumstances, miss the Mother's Day shebang.

It's nearly impossible to believe that we suffered from Eclipse Fever nearly a month ago now...

Thank you for sharing this! Man, does this bring back memories. Is it weird that I actually miss this version of Weather on the 8's? More immediately...currently 67/66, muggy and grey, some fog. Hoping that, since rain/storm percentages have been knocked back for today and focused around dinner time that we can get at least one of the lawns mowed...we've clearly lost the battle this week to the clover and buttercups, all weeding/edging I did two weeks ago has been obliterated, and my big plans for power washing the back patios this past weekend...also down the toilet. To suck @nj2va, this weather does indeed suck.

Sounds good! I gave up being in "pool shape" about 10 years ago...about the time that we started leasing out our share for the neighborhood pool, thank God.

90 here at home. Though not intolerably uncomfortable.

Oh, I'm quite sure. So, I have been tasked to "teach" a course in MS Copilot to not only my team of co-workers (around 10 folks), but potentially for larger groups across our organization in my "day job." I have about as much trust in Microsoft as I do Google...which is to say, meh. Beyond that...while generative AI has great potential as a "starter" tool when it comes to writing, I've already developed a disdain for it because in the undergrad courses that I teach as part of my "side/evening gig," easily ONE QUARTER (or more) of the students I've taught in several class offerings over the past 1.5 years have blatantly used generative AI to cheat their asses off in submitted papers and required discussions. There are generative AI "writing checkers" online now, but FFS...you can just tell, because there are always a couple students who normally write complete and total shite (in terms of grammar AND content), who suddenly turn in the most gorgeous, GENERATED prose ever. It's just so completely and egregiously obvious.

So. Dune Chapter Two. Who's seen it? I've clearly missed my opportunity to see it on the big screen. But I loved Denis Villanueve's interpretation of the "first half" from a couple years ago and purchased the digital version immediately back then. Full disclosure -- I'm...mostly...still a fan of the creepy 1984 version of Dune directed by David Lynch, but Villaneuve has clearly nailed the more modern/artistic vision of what I think Frank Herbert would want. I'm thinking I just need to go ahead and purchase Chapter Two as well. But if there are impressions out there...please share.

But...yesterday was kind of a last-minute surprise! I started catching up on this thread yesterday morning, and the LWX (and SPC) discos started being more spicy as the morning progressed, and...wow. My little corner of SE FfxCo didn't see much action (again, glad to miss out on the hail), but so many of you around us did. It was an impressive uptick in severe activity in a small amount of time. It's kind of why I increasingly like tracking severe in spring/summer, vs. the original reason why I came to this sub over a decade ago (tracking snow).
